Victoria’s Secret: Love Your Body Contest

victorias-secret-love-your-body-contest

It has been interesting the past year observing how the fashion industry is playing up to the needs of us normal humans who are not bone thin models or celebrities who can afford personal trainers and quick fix detox treatments. We’ve seen morbidly obese Beth Ditto pose nude for the cover of Love magazine, plus size models like Lizzie Miller appearing semi-nude in Glamour magazine and Crystal Renn writing memoirs about how she starved when she was a skinny model.

Crystal Renn: Hungry

Crystal Renn, once a super skinny model on the brink of collapse, has penned a new book Hungry. The now plus-size Ford model covers everything from health, to weight and even self-esteem issues in the memoir and hopes to shine a light on how people in the industry and in general perceive beauty.

“I’d like to see everyone take on the attitude that there are women of all different shapes and sizes as ‘the beauty ideal,’ and that it’s not one type or another. There are women who are naturally a size 2 — you can’t forget them, and that’s discrimination the other way,” Renn said in an interview. “All women bring something different to the table and we have to appreciate them all.”

Lizzie Miller Sparks Plus-Size Model Debate

lizzie miller

After the recent celebrity Photoshop fallout when Self magazine digitally slimmed down Kelly Clarkson on the cover of their September issue, a healthier, fuller photo has been published in a woman’s magazine. In Glamour magazine no less.

Twenty-year-old Lizzie Miller, who is between a size 12 and 14 and weighs 180 pounds, was photographed semi-nude for a story on body confidence that appears on p.194 of the fashion magazine’s September issue. Editor-in-chief Cindi Leive said on The Today Show that within hours of the magazine hitting the newsstands, their offices began receiving emails from readers about the photo.

Kelly Clarkson Gets Photoshopped

Just last week we saw Kelly Clarkson gracing the cover of the September issue of SELF Magazine.  Inside she said she was happy with her weight and thought that it’s other people who have issues about her weight.  However, that’s all good and fine until readers of the magazine start complaining because Clarkson’s image was considerably digitally slimmed-down.
In defense of the magazine the editor-in-chief Lucy Danziger said the photo was retouched in order for Clarkson to ‘look her personal best.’  She went on to say,
“I think this photo is the truest we have ever put out there on the newsstand.”
But readers see it differently. Considering Clarkson is a role model for so many girls and also boasts such a healthy body image the readers were essentially outraged.  One reader wrote at the jezebel.com website,
“Hey, hi, Self ladies: None this changes or explains the fact that YOU ALTERED THE BONE STRUCTURE OF HER FACE.”
Another reader made a clever remark asking why even have Clarkson pose if her body is not the one that SELF wants on their magazine.
Something that is not mentioned is that most magazines allow their celebs to give final approval of images.  So maybe instead of criticizing the magazines we need to confront the celebs on the degree to which they pretty up their photos.

Kelly Clarkson Does CrossFit Training

Pop singer Kelly Clarkson is on the cover of the September issue of Self Magazine.  The singer is used to the tabloids and the rumors about her weight, and though some days she is chubbier than others she never lets it get to her.  Not only can the girl sing but she has an admirable self-image that keeps her strong.  In the interview she admits that her weight fluctuates.  She said,
“My happy weight changes,” the American Idol champ says. “Sometimes I eat more; sometimes I play more. I’ll be different sizes all the time.”
Back in June she said that she gets tired of the fat joke and she finds it interesting that when people talk about her weight they are ones that have a problem about it, not her.  She went on to say that she always feels comfortable on the red carpet or any other event where she takes center stage.
When asked about her workout routine she said she uses CrossFit, a program used by police acadamies and military special operations that combines strength training and cardio.
“I love it! It’s like boot camp,” she says. “You never work out more than 35 minutes, but it’s so intense. You do things like box jumps, then 50 sit-ups, then 50 squats and then running.
Kelly said that the backup singers and also the hair-and-makeup girl do the program with her.  She continues on to say that she feels empowered and like ‘GI Jane’ because she gets so much energy from it.

Chantelle Houghton Battles Bulimia

Chantelle Houghton won Celebrity Big Brother back in 2006, since then she’s had small roles on television and continues to do fashion modeling.  Even though she’s rolling in the dough these days she admitted to the Daily Mail that she still has skeletons in the closet when it comes to her eating disorder.  She even admitted that at one time she was drinking 12.5 liters of water a day just to fill her stomach and curb her appetite.  She confessed,
“It’s a constant battle with my weight, and I’ll always have an issue with it,” she said.  ”I have tried every diet there is, from body wraps and the Special K diet to just drinking water, but I know I have to eat healthily and go to the gym, because that’s the only thing that works.”
In the above photo, she stripped down for Heat Magazine to show how she is curvier now and is coming to grips with having a normal body instead of being rail thin.
“I know I look better being curvier, but I put pressure on myself. I know I didn’t look healthy and I’d never want to be that skinny again, ever.  I was making myself sick a lot, so food was just coming straight back out of me.  I was obsessed from the minute I woke up in the morning until the minute I went to bed. I was constantly watching what I was eating. Food was always on my mind.”
Chantelle has now given up modeling and is striving to healthy and happy with who she is.

Karolina Kurkova on Weight and Body Image

Karolina Kurkova

The Victoria’s Secret Angel, Karolina Kurkova is often unjustly criticized for her weight.  Similar to stars like Kelly Clarkson and Jessica Simpson, she’ll gain a pound or two and the media starts wagging their tongues.  Karolina told Ok Magazine how she deals with such pressure.  She said,

“You just have to believe in yourself and know who you are.  It helps to be healthy. At the end of the day, I think that’s very important. And be realistic about your body and your body frame.”

Jordan Sparks on Body Image

jordin-sparks-on-body-imageAmerican Idol winner Jordin Sparks oozes the same confidence as other winners such as Kelly Clarkson and Jennifer Hudson when it comes to body image.  She did tell Ok! Magazine that she does some hiking and bike riding when at home, and she strives to eat healthily, but when it comes to the pressures of being ultra-thin in Hollywood she isn’t so concerned about it.

“I’m all up for working out and being healthy and eating right, but I don’t have to be a size four and I’ll never be a size four,” the Arizona native says. “If I ever get to that, you have permission to say ‘Jordin, what the heck is wrong with you?’ because I would blow over.”
