Alanis Morissette: Diet
The 35-year-old singer and song writer Alanis Morissette gives a candid interview about her past eating disorder struggles in the December issue of Health magazine. In the past year she has lost heaps of weight, run a couple of marathons and has become an advocate for eating disorder awareness. She told Health magazine that when she was a teenager she was both anorexic and bulimic because being in the public eye as a teen celebrity was just too much for her to handle. When she got into her 20s she was eating again but she wasn’t too concerned about health, she was just eating whatever she wanted, but because she was so busy she wasn’t necessarily getting fat.
But in her early 30s she packed on the pounds. Looking for a solution, a few years ago she came across the book Eat To Live and she now considers it her bible when it comes to living a healthy lifestyle. These days she eats high-nutrient foods like nuts, fruit and greens; she even puts greens in a blender to make a smoothie. Here’s what she said about her eating habits,
“For lunch, say, I’ll put it in a whole-grain wrap with cucumbers, green peppers, hummus, tomatoes, and some lemon juice, cayenne and hot sauce. I eat a lot of flaxseed oil to keep my omegs-3s up, and I put cruciferous veggies like broccoli in soups – they’re so good for you.”
Alanis said she will allow herself a glass of wine and a bit of chocolate but doesn’t deviate from her day-to-day diet. So now she has learned she can still eat her yummy pizzas but now they have soy cheese and organic tomatoes. Lastly, Alanis made a point to say that she wants to be a role model for women and her marathon running will hopefully influence them. She explained,
“I hope my effort shows any woman battling an eating disorder or poor body image that she’s not alone-support is out there-and inspires her to discover her inner athlete. It doesn’t matter what your fitness-skill level is. It’s all about finding the activity you enjoy most and sticking with it.”
