Aretha Franklin: Walking to Lose Weight

Here’s an update on Aretha Franklin’s weight loss efforts. Last we heard she was on the Jenny Craig diet plan. The Queen of soul has become the Queen of the treadmill telling People Magazine she lost

“A lot of weight. I won’t say the number, but I found the magic numbers on the treadmill. Slowly but surely. It’s all happy.”

Walking is what I call the “gateway exercise for weight loss.” If you just look at the number of calories burned you wouldn’t think it would be good for weight loss but this is not the full story. Walking helps preserve muscle, which is a 24 hour fat burning furnace. Just 45 minutes of walking will keep your metabolism up for 20 hours post exercise. It also helps keep insulin levels lower so you don’t store as much fat. Lastly, if that wasn’t convincing enough, the biggest losers of all time who have on average lost over 70 lbs and kept it off for an average of 6 years list walking as their number one exercise.

Hi Zoey,

Running is great too. I’m a big fan of walking because it is easy to incorporate into your lifestyle. Which means you can walk during your lunch break, walk to the store, walk a flight of stairs etc. And you get many of the weight loss benefits without knocking yourself out. Don’t get hung up on walking vs running. the key is to move.

I agree on the walking subject. It’s the only exercise I get. I have Fibromyalgia and Psoriatic arthritis and need a cane for walking any distance more than a hundred feet or so. I spend a lot of time pushing a shopping cart around Wally World and other stores. No, I’m not running any marathons or walking fast…I’m just strolling along, but at least I’m getting some exercise.
