Beth Ditto: Weight Controversy in Fashion World

Gossip is the punk rock group that grabbed international attention a few years ago with their one-hit-wonder and their incredible lead singer Beth Ditto. Ditto is infamous for wearing leggings and sports bras while performing on stage, taking provocative photos and wearing skimpy clothes during her day-to-day life. But over the past couple of weeks it seems that she is getting a lot of attention and it’s creating a firestorm of controversy on the net. Most recently, she posed nude on the cover of Love magazine. Beth does love her fashion and she is often seen at major international fashion shows and hangs out with the likes of Kate Moss. Naturally, she poses for artsy magazines and newspapers but some are starting to think that she is being used as a decoy. Because she’s ‘cool’ she’s getting covers on magazines and the fashion industry can say they respect and recognize all shapes and sizes. The fashion world can claim, ‘Hey, look, not all of our models are bone thin!’ A writer for GQ magazine, Alex Bilmes, wrote in his blog,
“Here’s what happened: stung by criticism of their unhealthy obsession with sexy supermodels, they hit back by lionising a pathologically exhibitionist 16 stone [225 pounds] woman from Arkansas. Clever, huh? That’ll get the feminazis off their case. How can anyone say they only promote thin women when they are so enamoured of a porker like her?”
He continues,
“The fact that Beth Ditto is morbidly obese, and therefore arguably just as bad an example to young women as a girl ten stone lighter than her, seems to have escaped their notice. Meanwhile, girls who fall between the two extremes – pretty much every vaguely healthy woman on the planet – are still routinely dismissed as being not interesting or beautiful enough to be photographed for a women’s magazine.”
What do you think? Healthy or unhealthy? Is the fashion industry being hypocritical?
