Buzz Aldrin’s Diet and Workout On Dancing With Stars

by Megan on March 24, 2010

At 80-years-old you’d think Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the moon and first to do a moonwalk, would sit back and relax into his retirement. But as the oldest contestant on Dancing With The Stars, Aldrin reveals that he’s quite fit for his age.

Although he hasn’t been working out as hard since his moon-landing 40 years ago, Aldrin plays golf and even goes skiing. But more remarkably, every now and then he climbs the 23 flights of stairs in the building he lives. Aldrin says that surprisingly back in the day when he was still part of the astronaut business, there were no standardized fitness regimes – you had to take responsibility for your own fitness and be disciplined about it if you wanted to stay in the NASA program.

When it comes to his diet, Aldrin admits that his wife is very health-conscious about their diet. While he doesn’t drink alcohol or smoke, Aldrin and his wife also don’t eat sugar and instead stick to fruits, green vegetables and proteins. But he does enjoy an Epsom salt bath from time to time.

Since he began training for the TV dance contest (which premiered on March 22 on ABC), Aldrin says he’s noticed an improved difference in his body and mind – he says his brain seems quicker and more in control, while a few of his trousers are getting too big to wear.

“You’re doing this whole choreographed routine in a few minutes, so you really have to use your memory and be multi-tasking with your thinking to get different parts of your body to go in different directions,” he says. “As we mature, I really feel it’s necessary to keep the mind active and to have a couple of things going on at the same time like that.”
