As part of the revised Health Care Bill, which was signed by President Barack Obama this week, fast food restaurants and chains which have stores in more than 20 locations will be required by law to include calorie counts on menus, menu boards and drive-throughs. Affecting more than 200 000 restaurants, this new law is effective immediately.
While this will definitely ensure that consumers know exactly what they’re putting into their bodies, the law will also change the American food system and make people more aware of the impact they can make on their health and environment – processed foods and factory-farmed meat affect carbon emissions, water quality because of pesticides and antibiotics.
However, there may be a delay in rolling out all of the regulations stipulated in the Bill because the FDA will have to write a few of the laws before they can be imposed.
