Can drinking water help you lose weight?

Although there was a study in 2003 that reported drinking a ½ liter of water caused a 30% increase in metabolism (burning 100 calories), subsequent studies have failed to show that water drinking burns any significant calories. A follow up 2006 study done at the University of Fribourg in Switzerland, addressed whether drinking water had any effect on metabolism. Their findings showed:

  • Drinking room-temperature distilled water did not increase metabolism or calories burned.
  • When ice water was tested, they reported only a small 4% increase in calories burned over 1 hour.

These results show that drinking water does not have any significant role in increasing metabolic rate or calories-burned.

I often hear to lose weight, one needs to burn calories. Since water has no calories, I suppose there is nothing to burn.
