Jane Seymour lost 20 lbs while training on Dancing with the Stars! Now this is one celeb that I think we can all agree doesn’t need to lose weight. In fact, Jane has been trying to put on weight recently. Now why is it that Jane Seymour feels she needs to put on weight while other celebs are having trouble losing?

Let’s take a look at her diet. Her diet consists of fresh fruits and veggies and some lean protein. She also stays away from sodas and alcohol. The secret to understanding successful weight loss is to reflect on how we evolved as a species. I can tell you, it wasn’t on trans-fats, refined carbs (white flour products), cheese, prime rib, coke, gummi bears etc. Our food consisted of mainly veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, and occasional lean protein. Stick with this main principle and you’ll understand how to lose a lot of weight. Generally the less processed the foods you eat, the healthier and thinner you will be.

Suddenly with all the training, Jane can’t keep the weight on. I’m not surprised.

Rocco Dispirito lost weight on Atkins!? Total heresy I say. This guy grew up on pasta! Rocco jump started his weight loss on Atkins for 1 1/2 months, losing 30 lbs. Now back to a more normal diet, Rocco limits sugar and eats lots of salads. He’s also started competing in triathlons.

For those of you who may not remember, Rocco got his “break” with the reality TV series “The Restaurant.” The series didn’t last too long, and the food didn’t frankly look that good, but Rocco still makes the rounds on QVC, the Food Network and various morning shows.

As many of you know, much of the initial weight loss on Atkins is water loss because as you go into ketosis you deplete glycogen stores which hold on to water. After that, Atkins does result in “real” weight loss. Personally I believe Atkins is easier to follow than most diets, because in our overly processed world it’s easy to “throw out the bun and eat the burger.” Or in Rocco’s case throw out the pasta. Finding veggie and fruit options at fast food restaurants for instance, is a lot harder proposition. By cutting out the carbs (refined carbs) you are essentially cutting out some of the most calorie dense foods (cakes, breads, cookies etc) in the American diet. So what a lot of people don’t realize is that on an Atkins diet you are essentially cutting back on calories. The problem with Atkins is that although it may be easier to follow, it’s too high in animal protein which causes cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Interestingly, although many people report some initial success with the diet, only 1% of people who have on average lost 70 lbs and kept it off for 6 years report using an Atkins style diet.

As for Rocco, never trust a skinny chef:)

I recently profiled Mel B, aka Scary Spice who is now strutting her stuff on Dancing with the Stars, for saying that she didn’t diet or count calories. However, it’s clear that her diet of fruits, veggies, lean meats and whole grains, is healthy and frankly looks like a typical “diet” to me. For someone who says she doesn’t “diet,” she does report using a dieting trick. Her secret is the cold water diet.

Mel B says she burns more calories by drinking cold water with all her meals because the body uses energy to heat up the water during digestion. So does it work? Theoretically yes, practically not very much. Yes it’s true that you’ll burn 4 % more calories drinking ice cold water over the course of an hour, and at 3 glasses of ice cold classes of water per day, you could theoretically lose 2-3 pounds after a year. Drinking room temperature water will not increase your metabolism, so there is a small theoretical benefit to cold water. I say small because you’re better off concentrating on your diet than drinking cold water.

I am always taken aback by all the “spin.” First it’s I don’t diet, but here I use this diet trick. Well, Mel B may actually believe this but it sends the wrong message to those trying to lose weight. The magazines are always trying to “spin” a new angle on a diet. Unfortunately, potential dieters may get the wrong impression and jump on the latest quick fix only to be disappointed. A good healthy diet is still the key to successful weight loss, by far… And I do recommend drinking water, just don’t expect miracles.

R&B and soul singer, Jill Scott has certainly experienced the ups and downs in her weight the past year. In addition to winning 2 Grammy’s, she’s got her big Hollywood break by getting a role in the move “Why did I get married?” which began filming in February. She had just lost 28 lbs by biking prior to signing up for the movie, but in preparation for her upcoming role she was told to gain 30 lbs…. and also “wear a fat suit.”

So Jill fattened up on chocolate, cheesesteaks and milk shakes to go from size 12 jeans to size 18. She is losing the weight by walking 90 minutes and eating salads and seafood. Jill has since lost about 10 lbs and her goal is a size 14.

Eat junk food to gain weight and eat healthy to lose. Highly processed foods, such as junk food, are also almost universally high in calories. Foods that are not as processed not only are healthier but will also help you lose weight. Healthy food in, results in weight loss, health, and a slim figure out.

“Never say diet” according to the latest Shape Mag. Hmmm… I am always amused by such statements and looking at what Heather Graham eats, I can say without hesitation she does diet, but doesn’t know it. While there may be some extraordinary individuals who can eat whatever they want without gaining weight, for 99.49% of the population this does not hold true. A self described foodie, Heather Graham loves healthy Mexican and Japanese dishes.

Here’s one of Heather’s favorite recipes:

Heather’s Favorite Broccoli Recipe
While making a film in Dublin, Ireland last year, Heather got addicted to this crunch dish from Avoca Café.

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 5-7 minutes
Nutrition Score per serving:
(2 cups): 285 calories, 22 g fat (69% of calories), 4 g sat fat, 17 g carbs, 10 g protein, 7 g fiber, 176 mg calcium, 3 mg iron, 370 mg sodium

Ingredients
¾ cup hazelnuts
6 cups broccoli florets (bite size)
1 ½ cups cherry tomatoes, halved
4 oz feta cheese
¼ cup reduced-fat French dressing
Freshly ground pepper (optional)

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spread hazelnuts on a shallow pan and bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until golden brown. Rub off the skins with a clean kitchen towel and allow to cool.In a large mixing bowl, add broccoli, cherry tomatoes, and cheese. Add nuts once they’ve cooled. Pour on the dressing and toss gently to combine.

Celeb Diet Doctor Weigh In…
Here’s the deal. As a healthy foodie, Heather can control what goes in her dishes and judging by her recipe she’s eating low cal. People often get in trouble when they eat out because there are a lot of added stealth calories. The more you can prepare your meals at home the better you’ll be at controlling your calorie intake.

Heather works out on a daily basis and it shows. She says “I’ve been practicing yoga five days a week for 11 years. About two years ago I realized my stomach was kind of mushy, so I started doing Pilates twice a week to strengthen my abs. Now it feels and looks much more toned.” She also uses Transcendental Meditation to help her de-stress.

Heather, who is 37 btw, has got the bod of a woman in her 20’s. Her recipe of yoga and Pilates, along with being a healthy foodie is obviously paying off.

Ricki Lake’s remarkable weight loss is making headlines again in this week’s issue of Ok Magazine, to help publicize the premiere of her Lifetime movie, Matters of Life and Dating. If you recall Ricki was profiled on the US magazine front cover a couple months ago. At her heaviest she weighed 260 pounds in 1991, and had been on a slew of diets including South Beach, the Zone, Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, Atkins and the Master Cleanse. She got serious this time around on February 2 of this year in preparation for the premiere of her documentary, The Business of Being Born, at the Tribecca Film Festival.

Ricki’s Diet
With the help of a meal delivery service, freshdining.com, she had slimmed down to 123 pounds and continues to keep the weight off. She keeps to a 1200 calorie per day diet. Here’s a sample…

Breakfast - French Toast and turkey sausage

Lunch - Mainly salads with a little steak

Dinner - Fish with brown rice and veggies

She reveals her weakness is bread, but now “I’ll have one piece of bread instead of the whole basket.”

Ricki’s Workout
She’s a big fan of hiking and walking. Previously she revealed that she didn’t use a trainer, but it appears she has recently begun working out with a trainer with “the goal of being tight and firm, not to lose weight.” She works out with her trainer 1 hour 3 times a week mainly focusing on weight training alternating upper body and lower body workouts.

Celeb Diet Doctor Weigh in…
Go Ricki! Her weight loss is truly inspiring and a model for all those looking to lose weight. Despite a history of yo-yo dieting she has managed to keep it off by sticking to a meal plan the emphasizes lean protein, fruits and veggies. She also knows the importance of portion control by not binging on bread. She hikes 4 1/2 miles a day, which shows that you don’t have to knock yourself off to lose weight. Now it looks like she has added some weight training, which will also help to build up some metabolically active muscle which should also help to keep the weight off.

Ryan Phillipe is a man with a diet plan. After splitting with Reese Witherspoon, the actor has been losing some lbs with a food delivery service according to Us Weekly mag. Just 3 weeks on his new diet, it sounds like it’s part of his plan to get in shape for upcoming roles in Last Battle Dreamer and the 2008 drama, Franklyn.

It’s billed as a low-carb, and low sodium plan. Ryan’s menu includes smoked turkey wraps, pomegranate pancakes and pot roast. The pomegranate pancakes don’t sound low carb to me, but it’s possible they are partially made with soy flour which has a high protein content. I couldn’t find an ingredient list on the site but you can check it out at freshdining.com Unfortunately it’s only available in southern California. Btw, Ricki Lake also used this service to shed some unwanted weight.

I am a fan of food delivery meal plans, provided they are healthy, contain lots of fruits and veggies, and don’t contain refined sugars, trans fats etc. A meal plan is simple and helps you avoid temptation.

I ran across this in the recent issue of People mag but it looks like this is old news since there are reports of her weight loss in January of this year. Liza was also reported to have “thanked” Kirstie Alley for joining Jenny Craig. Call me a little skeptical but this smacks of a carefully orchestrated marketing plan by Jenny Craig to get celebs to endorse these diets. As you know Kirstie is having weight troubles herself and looks to have gained some weight recently.

Interestingly I was not able to find any ingredient info on the Jenny Craig website. Perhaps it’s for a reason because this review on ePicurious.com states that Jenny Craig meals are high in refined sugar, low in fiber and have transfats. The review ends by saying “If you follow this diet, you’ll probably want to take a fiber supplement.”

A diet high in refined sugar will fuel cravings which is why Jenny Craig, which relies on portion control, is going to be difficult to stick with. The recommendation to take a fiber supplement is ridiculous. More fruits and veggies is the answer.

I have always said one of the keys to successful weight loss is having a plan. Fergie, lead singer of the band Black Eyed Peas, follows in the footsteps of fellow celebs Ricki Lake and Janet Jackson by using a food delivery service to stay on plan. The 5 foot 4 inch singer lost 20 lbs on a personalized meal plan created by her nutritionist, Carrie Wiatt of Diet Designs.

Fergie’s Diet Plan
The overall diet philosophy for Fergie is pure food, nothing processed, organic when possible and portion control. She grazes every 3 hours on healthy snacks to keep her metabolism up. Here’s a typical menu for Fergie, courtesy of Life and Style mag.

Breakfast Fergie begins her day with a six-egg-white veggie omelet, seasoned with salsa or hot sauce. A smart start on the go? Pack two slices of 100-percent whole-grain toast with 2 tablespoons of peanut butter.

Midday Snack Fergie’s go-to munchie? Light organic cheese (like a mozzarella stick or 1 ounce of Jarlsberg Lite) and rice crackers with flaxseed. (You can eat eight!) She never goes anywhere without first tucking Kashi bars into her purse.

Mid-A.M. Bite Top 4 ounces of low-fat or no-fat plain organic yogurt with 2 tablespoons of low-sugar granola (such as Bear Naked). “It’s low in sugar and has protein,” says Fergie’s nutritionist, Carrie Wiatt, who suggests pairing it with a bowl of fiber-filled berries. (Cottage cheese makes a great yogurt alternative.)

Pre-Supper Nosh Wiatt whips up a pureed vegetable soup — sans cream. At only 50 calories per cup, the small indulgence is super filling. Other light treats? Carrots dipped in 2 tablespoons of hummus, a cup of air-popped popcorn or almonds.

Lunch A Fergie fave? Mixed greens, a quarter of an avocado, 4 ounces of shredded chicken (for protein) and half an antioxidant-rich grapefruit, all tossed with a nonfat dressing. (The same ingredients can be rolled into a 100-percent whole-grain tortilla.)

Dinner Fergie eats salmon (rich in Omega-3’s) and half a cup of whole-wheat couscous. She piles on 2 cups of veggies and adds 2 tablespoons of chili sauce or honey Dijon mustard for flavor. (Grilled balsamic chicken, brown rice and a side of sautéed spinach is another great dinner option.)

Fergie’s is feeling good about her diet,

“I’ve grown into loving who I am,” she recently said. “Even though there are always things you want to change, I still feel good about myself because I know I’m doing everything in my power to be healthy.”

I am a fan of a food delivery service, because it’s a no brainer. You avoid temptation by sticking with the planned meals and not eating out. Follow the food menu, and the weight loss is automatic. It works for Fergie and it can work for you…

Katherine Heigl has slimmed down while on the hit series Grey’s Anatomy with the help of celeb trainer Harley Pasternak and his 5 Factor Diet Plan. Katherine’s lunchtime workouts include 25- 50 minute sessions that begin and end with cardio and mix arm, leg and ab moves in between. Her 5 Factor diet plan consists of 5 small meals a day that contain:

Lean protein such as turkey

Healthy carbs including fruit, veggies and whole grains

5-10 grams of fiber (such as 1 cup of berries or half a cup of cooked veggies)

Healthy fats (found in salmon or nuts)

Water of tea

Here’s a peek at Katherine’s 5 Factor Diet Plan courtesy of Life and Style magazine:

Breakfast - French toast 5 factor style. In a nonstick skillet, heat 2 pieces of whole-grain bread dipped in egg whites. Top with 1/8 cup of nonfat ricotta and cinnamon. Or try 1 cup of Kashi GoLean in 1 cup of nonfat milk.

Snack - Berry Smoothie. Blend a cup of berries with 2 cups of nonfat milk. Add crushed ice and half a scoop of whey or soy portein (makes 2 smoothies). Or try a slice of pear with 2/3 cup of cottage cheese.

Lunch - Katherine’s favorite is a tortilla pizza. Layer a nonflour tortilla with tomato sauce, Roma tomatoes, turkey, pepperoni, basil, and nonfat mozzarella. Warm up in a toaster oven. Another option is tossing grilled shrimp, spinach and feta cheese into a greek salad.

Snack - Celery and carrot sticks in hummus, or in a spinach dip made from nonfat sour cream and nonfat mozzarella. Or try a slice of whole grain toast topped with 1 cup of low-fat berry yogurt.

Dinner - Marinated sea bass over a cup of brown rice or edamame or herb crusted salmon on a bed of lentils. 5 factor version of spaghetti and meatballs is spagehetti squash with ground turkey breast.

Celebrity Diet Doctor Weigh In…
The “5″ in 5 factor is little on the gimmicky side. Otherwise it’s a sensible plan. Up the fruits and veggies and you’ll lose even more weight, but I’m not going to argue with the results. Katherine looks stunning.
