Gemma Arterton, most known for her role as the Bond Girl opposite Daniel Craig is almost unrecognizable these days. Once bone thin and sveltely Bond Girl-like, the actress is now a healthy size 10 and she knows how to flaunt her curves. Over the weekend she attended the premiere of her new movie, The Disappearance of Alice Creed and while on the red carpet it was evident she has no plans to lose her shapely hourglass figure.

“I refuse to conform to this muscly, sinewy look that so many actresses seem to think is attractive. I hate it and I don’t think it’s very feminine.”

In early 2009 the actress was criticized for having a double chin. But she is adamant about her decision of nonconformity and she’s happy with being a size 10. She explained,

“I dress like a woman and wear a lot of couture because it’s made for real women with curves. I’m a size ten, which I don’t think is big.”

Evidently Gemma has made the right decision because since gaining the weight she scored a role in the aforementioned current movie and she’ll be staring in a new movie version of Wuthering Heights and also in the upcoming St Trinian’s 2.

The dashing Hollywood star George Clooney always looks handsome and fit and probably doesn’t even know how to gain weight. So when he had to gain weight for a movie role he decided to turn to an old friend who knows how to do it right, Renee Zellweger. Clooney told the Daily Express,

“When I found out I had to pile on the pounds – no way was I going to wear a ‘fat suit’, that would have looked so fake – I rang up Renée, an old friend, and asked how she managed to put weight on for the Bridget Jones movies.”

Considering that Zellweger has had to gain and lose weight twice for her roles she’s definitely got some experience. Clooney went on to say that his old pal suggested that every night he drink pints of Guinness and lots of pasta topped with cream. It did the trick because Clooney sported a very thick physique for his role in Syriana. A pint of Guinness has 210 calories and a plate of pasta has so many carbs and fat grams that it’s too much to mention for fear of gaining weight through association!

Baywatch babe Nicole Eggert was the star of many a man’s dream when she played Summer Quinn on the 90s TV series. But while she’s certainly by no means fat, she has put on some weight since packing away her red bathing suit and paddle.

And that’s totally understandable; Nicole is a 37-yeard-old mother now.

Taylor Lautner, who plays Jacob Black in the teen-vampire movie Twilight installments, has been getting all kinds of attention over the past few months as he has bulked up to a new size. The media loves reporting on his milkshake diet and how he gained 30 pounds of muscle for his latest transformation in New Moon. Of course girls are drooling over his new ripped physique but Taylor is a tad bashful about his new found fame as a heartthrob.

Over the weekend while at Teen Vogue’s 7th Annual Young Hollywood party in Los Angeles he revealed his embarrassment to Us Magazine. He said,

“It’s actually quite uncomfortable knowing so many people are seeing that! It’s a little bit embarrassing!”

The 17-year-old put in a lot of hard time for his new look and going shirtless in the sequel required him to change both his diet and exercise habits. He said,

“Eating, working out – a lot of stuff.”

We can’t feel too bad for the buff werewolf because us fans are loving it. Surely he’ll get used to the girls chasing him around. New Moon will be in theaters on November 20th.

Actress Renee Zellweger may not be piling on the pounds when she reprises her role as Bridget Jones for the third instalment of the comedy movies at the end of this year. The first two movies grossed more than $544 million, so one can understand why Zellweger signed on to do the third.

But this time round, the 40-year-old Oscar winner will be doing the responsible thing when it comes to her body.

“Renee will be wearing a fat suit in the third film as it took her a while to lose the weight last time,” a source told Britain’s Reveal magazine. “She’s also thinking about the effect quickly putting on and then losing 30 pounds has on her body.”

Matt Damon was all the buzz at last week’s Toronto Film Festival. His new movie, The Informant, was highly regarded, but more people were talking about his considerable weight gain for the role. At the festival an OK Magazine blogger caught up with Damon to get the inside scoop on how he gained the weight. He explained that he planned his weight gain approximately four months before filming. First, he quit exercising for two months and then after that he noticed the weight gain in the third and fourth months. He even admitted to enjoying being chubby and his wife said that he had ‘more to love.’ Damon explained,

“I really did love it. If I had to stay there, I’d be happy. I had to stop exercising two months before I started to put it on, and did the movie a couple months later.”

The biggest mystery is to how Damon gained the weight and then dropped it so quickly. However, it’s normally easy for guys to lose weight faster than women. According to Damon,

“I think people have a natural range of weight that they’re in, and I probably went outside mine so it was probably easier to lose the weight. The gaining weight was alarmingly easy – that was just drinking beer and eating pizza.”

Matt Damon stars in the film, Steven Soderbergh’s Informant, that is being viewed this week at the Venice film festival. The film is based on the non-fiction book by Kurt Eichenwald which tracks the story of the corporate whistler-blower, Mark Whitacre. To play the part of Whitacre, Damon had to gain a whopping 35 pounds for the role. He said,

“It was very, very easy to gain the weight,” he said. “It was very, very fun, probably the funnest time I had working, because I didn’t have to go to the gym after work and I just ate everything I could see.”

Damon joins the list of many actors and actresses that go to extreme measures in perfecting their method-acting skills. But as we’ve learned from stars like Jamie Foxx who had to undergo counseling and Renee Zellweger whose nutritionist warned her of the health risks, extreme weight gain and weight loss can be detrimental to the body and mind. Of course it will be easy for Damon to lose the weight with the help of his personal trainer and watching what he eats. But even though he gets a fat paycheck for playing the role and can afford the assistance required to lose the weight, it’s a shame that he has to abuse his body for the sake of a movie.

The Kath & Kim star Magda Szubanski is one of the Jenny Craig weight loss heroes.  But now that she has dropped the 80 pounds the bigger challenge is keeping the weight off.  She told New Idea magazine that she’s afraid her sweet tooth will take over and she’ll gain the weight.

“I’m scared about putting weight on – and so I should be.”

The 48-year-old actress is committed to her weight loss journey and she said that no matter how long it takes she is ready for this lifestyle change and she wants to keep the weight off.  Now that she has gone from a size 26 to a size 14 she is more motivated than ever.

She said,

“It’s hard. You’ve just got to keep at it. The first part’s quite easy but it gets harder as you try to lose more,” she says. “But the satisfaction when I reached my goal weight was incredible.”

According to nutritionist Kate Di Prima the clients that visit her, up to 50% of them, have lost weight successfully and then gained it back because of failed diets.  Understandably, Magda is worried.  Hopefully she’ll stick to it because she did admit that even though she has reached her weight loss goal when it came to her Jenny Craig challenge she is still in the overweight category and maybe still in the obese category because now she weighs 187 pounds. Fans just can’t get enough of Taylor Lautner and the rest of the Twilight crew.  And as for the media, they can’t seem to get enough of Taylor’s bulking physique.  Over the past few months the tabloids have given us tips on his workout routine, his new self-image and his actual struggles with being buff.  There was one small interview out there that implied Taylor didn’t even like his fit form and wanted to be thin again. But in his latest interview with Entertainment Weekly it’s hard to feel sorry for the guy because he gets to eat milkshakes, yum!  He said,

“My body fat got so low that we actually needed to increase it a little bit,” he says. “My trainer would be like, ‘Go have a huge milk shake just so I can get a thousand calories into your body.’”

It seems that men are the lucky ones when it comes to diet and exercise.  If they train hard they get to eat whatever they want but for women, we train hard and still have to watch our calories.

The sexy Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie has joined the list of Hollywood celebrity shape-shifters who gain or lose weight for a role.  Christian Bale and Renee Zellweger seem to pull it off and it looks like Fergie can too.  For her role in the movie Nine she gained 17 pounds and even though the movie has yet to be released she has already dropped the weight and is back in fit condition.  In a new interview with the Daily Record newspaper she said she enjoyed putting on the weight.

“It was easy to put it on and it was fun and I loved it. I ate fried foods, everything, and I just didn’t work out at all.”

She went on to explain that she wasn’t worried about it while she was gaining.  It had been the first time since high school that she let herself eat whatever she wanted.  After filming when it was time to get back in shape, Fergie got a personal trainer to stay motivated.  She said,

“It really took me a while mentally to get back to that routine. So now I have a trainer, which is great, and keeps me motivated.”
