Margaret Cho has been super busy these days. She’s lost 40 pounds and can be seen on her new reality series on VHI The Cho Show. She’s tried a slew of diets - the raw diet, the macrobiotic diet, the fruits only diet - and a diet so extreme that it caused her to be hospitalized with kidney failure. Despite this she says “I was still fat.” Margaret reveals how she lost the weight on the “whatever” diet…

Margaret Cho’s “Whatever” Diet
Starting in 2003, shes ate “whatever” - pizza, french fries… whatever! And since then has managed to lose 40 pounds. She eats anything including “ice cream, chips, everything.”

When I was on crazy diets, I’d gain weight because I would binge on diet food! I learned that any restriction on the kind of food I was eating was going to be problem. By saying I can eat whatever I want, I don’t crave it as much

She’s ditched the spinning classes for belly dancing classes. She’s also developed a positive mindset “I don’t trip about the number that is on the inside of my clothes.”

Margaret’s tips on losing weight on “whatever”
1. She eats “only when I’m hungry.”
2. Her big meals are breakfast and lunch. She opts for a small dinner at 4 pm

Margaret looks great and she illustrates that you can lose weight any number of ways. For her, she learned to have the foods she loved and still lose weight by eating consciously (when she was hungry), avoiding late night snacking and practicing portion control. As far as the diet the put her in the hospital… it’s probably a “detox” fasting diet I talked about earlier.

Do you think you can lose weight the “whatever” way?

Kelly Osbourne has made a remarkable transformation. The 5 foot 3 inch star lost an estimated 30 pounds since her role in the 2007 production of Chicago according to Life and Style mag. She reveals her 6 Slim down secrets…

“Insiders” reveal that

“Kelly used to eat just about anything she could pop in the microwave.”

Now she’s eating smaller portions of healthier foods.

Kelly Osbourne’s 6 slim down secrets:

1. Organic veggies and fruits (she keeps celery and carrot sticks in her fridge to much on)
2. Saying no to her favorite cookies.
3. Putting the kabosh on late night eating.
4. Cutting out beer
5. Keeping her food intake to around 1,200 to 1,500 calories a day.

Kelly has got a new positive outlook on food “is perfectly happy with her new figure.” There was a report that Kelly lost the weight because of an overactive thyroid and was <a href="http://www.mirror.co.uk/news/top-stories/2006/06/03/kelly-osbourne-s-dramatic-weight-loss-89520-17170877/" onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.mirror.co.uk');"rel="nofollow" >allegedly quoted as saying “I have a thyroid problem which means I s*** all the time. My doctors want me to start taking steroids for it but f*** that. I don’t want to put all the weight back on again.”

Celeb diet doc weigh in…
First off let me say I seriously doubt that Kelly’s slim down is due to an overactive thyroid. Fact is many people with an overactive thyroid, or hyperthyroidism, do not lose weight. An overactive thyroid makes them hungrier so they eat more which more than offsets their increased metabolism. It all comes down to watching what you eat and making smart choices. Kelly made smart choices and it shows. Kelly looks fab!

Melissa Joan Hart gained 40 pounds during her pregnancy to son, Brady. With a sensible diet plan she used her “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” superpowers to shed all but five pounds of her post baby weight. How did she do it?

Melissa Joan Hart Post Baby Diet
Her diet rules are: no refined sugars, no white starches, and protein with every meal. As far as sticking to her plan she admits that

“I’m really disciplined in the morning. Lunch gets a little harder for me, then dinner’s when I get a little out of hand.” After a long day she says I’m tired and I’m just like “I want food.”‘

She does indulge in ice cream, chips and guacamole. Melissa reveals she is five pounds from her pre-pregnancy weight and her goal is to drop another 10 over the course of the year.

Her Fitness plan
She works out 3 days a week with a trainer (she started this four weeks post birth, after getting the OK from her OB/GYN physician). Her workouts include 30 minutes of spinning and 30 minutes of floor exercises.

She says her secret to juggling 2 kids and a successful marriage to hubby, Mark, is that “after 8 pm is mommy and daddy time. We enjoy each other. There’s nothing we can get from someone else that we can’t get from each other. As long as we keep our communication open, we can easily work out any problem.”

Celeb Diet Doc….
Melissa’s done a great job getting back in shape. When she talks about “I just want food” she may be missing out on snacks which would help curb her cravings during the course of the day. Basically she needs to eat more of the right foods during the day so she doesn’t “fall off the wagon” with late night binge eating. The ice cream and chips are potential diet busters if she does not practice strict portion control.

Brooke Burke, 36 and mother of 4 children, looks amazing after giving birth to her baby boy, Shaya, in March. She’ll be strutting her stuff with partner, Derek Hough, in the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars.  Brooke reveals her secrets on how she lost the baby weight…

Brooke Burke Diet

Brooke eats “five times a day to speed up my metabolism.” For breakfast she has oatmeal with fruit, a midmorning snack and a big salad with some protein for lunch. For dinner she likes to have fish and veggies, sometimes with a glass of wine. She says “the main point is not to starve your body.”

Brooke sounds like she has fun with her workouts. She loves jumping on a trampoline and also enjoys walking and Pilates. With her newborn it’s understandable that Brooke does not get a lot of sleep, but she says she works with her fiance, David Charvet, to “motivate each other to go for walks and hikes. We make it fun.”

As a side note she says she used a belly wrap (wrapped tightly around the tummy) after her birth to reduce water retention and strengthen stomach muscles. She says she wore the wrap day and night. Not surprisingly she is peddling her own wrap now. I would avoid this. If anything, by supporting the abdominal muscles they will become weaker not stronger.

My Take…
A sensible diet plan with fruits and veggies powered her slim down. Shes sums it up by saying “I love to eat. I don’t believe in these crazy starvation diets.” Brooke proves you can eat great food and lose weight!

P.S. You can follow Brooke and post comments on her blog.

Britney Spears is back in shape with the help of a new diet and workout regimen according to Ok magazine. How did she do it?

Britney Spears Diet
“I have no sugar. I don’t eat fruit of even fruit juice because of the sugar. I eat chicken and salmon and rice. I eat avocados. I’ll have egg whites for breakfast and sometimes turkey burgers for launch. I try to do just 1,200 caloires a day…. It may sound like it’s not much, but it’s actually a lot of food if you eat the right things.”

Instead of the Starbucks Fracppuccinos she had on a daily basis she has coffee with Equal.

Britney Spears Workout
She’s been doing “a lot of cardio and weights” working out 5 days a week with the weekends off.

Celeb Diet Doc Weigh in …
Sounds like Britney is getting her life together and her healthier diet is a far cry from her daily diet of junk food that we reported about last year. However the idea that fruits are “high sugar” and should be avoided is simply false. Yes processed fruits and fruit juices should be avoided, but whole unprocessed fruits are some of the most powerful weight loss foods on earth. Fruits get a bad rap because many dietitians, nutritionists, diet gurus, trainers etc have all blindly followed the lead of Atkins and South Beach as labeling many fruits as “bad.” It’s the blind leading the blind.  If you would like to learn more download my special report where I outline why fruits mistakenly get a bad rap. Processed sugar and grains are to be avoided if you are looking to lose weight, not fruits.

Carnie Wilson has dropped 40 pounds from her top post-gastric bypass weight of 208 pounds, according to OK Magazine . You may remember that Carnie, with the help of gastric bypass surgery, shed 150 lbs from her 300 lb high. However she regained weight with her pregnancy… and no doubt a diet full of processed foods. Now many of you may be asking, “she had gastric bypass, she shouldn’t have any weight problems.”

So how can gastric bypass fail? Gastric bypass is not the “cure all” everybody thinks it is. And remember gastric bypass is not without risk. Although post surgical death rates have been reported to be 0.1-2%, among MediCare patients the risk of early postsurgical mortality among 16,155 Medicare patients treated during 1997–2002 was found to be even higher: 30-day mortality rate of 2%, which rose to 2.8% at the 90-day mark and 4.6% at the end of 1 year.

So how can a gastric bypass patient regain weight, despite having a walnut-sized stomach that can only hold an ounce of food? The culprit many times are liquid and semi-solid calories. No matter how small you make the stomach, liquid calories and semi-solids such as whip cream “bypass” the gastric bypass and cause weight gain. Here’s the deal, gastric bypass is NOT the solution. Obesity is not a plumbing problem! If you don’t change your behaviors and continue to consume highly processed, calorie-rich foods you will gain weight… EVEN with a gastric bypass.

Back to Carnie Wilson…

Carnie Wilson’s Diet:

She reveals to Ok Magazine: “No sugar, no carbs, no dairy, no red meat, no flour of any kind. I’m eating blueberries, turkey bacon, egg whites, and lots of raw vegetable salads. I make my own salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. My only fat is coming from olive oil. No avocado, no roasted nuts - just raw almonds.” She curbs cravings at night with “a tablespoon of almond butter.”

She goes on to say “the only sugary thing is berries.”

One thing that is troubling is her “motivation strategy” which includes cooking comfort foods for others.. bread puddings and banana bread, but not eating it herself.  She claims she does “a lot of tasting and spitting out.”

Her workouts include Yoga and strength training.

The Celeb Diet Doc weigh in…

OK, here’s my assessment. Kudos on the salads and blueberries! These are the keys to her current slim down. Carnie needs to stop cooking comfort foods and by all means stop tasting these foods!! It’s like a smoker who says they quit smoking last week, but later tells you that they only take a couple puffs now. It tells me she is not going to stick with her current plan and will resort back to the foods that got her in trouble in the first place. Without proper behavior modification even gastric bypass will fail.

A diet misconception promoted by many “low carbers” is that blueberries are “high carb” and should be avoided. This is frankly ridiculous. You will not gain weight with unprocessed blueberries. As Hillary famously stated at the Democratic convention: “No way, No how, No weight gain with blueberries!”

“Low carbers” falsely label all carbs as bad and get the misguided notion that many fruits, such as mangos and berries, are “high carb” and will cause weight gain. False! Processed carbs will cause weight gain, not fruits. But that’s a discussion that’s best left for another post…

Trista Sutter, the former Bachelor and Bachelorette reality TV star, is on a mission to lose her post-baby weight. She recently gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Max, one month early by C-section due to pregnancy complications. Her pregnancy was a rough one, with Trista not only developing gestational diabetes, but also HELLP syndrome, a serious complication of preeclampsia (hypertension associated with protein in the urine) marked by elevated liver enzymes, low red blood cells and platelets. Both Trista and baby are doing fine now. The 5 foot 2 mom, lost 22 lbs so far and currently wears a size 4 and weighs 116 lbs. Her goal is to drop another 10 and get back in her skinny jeans!

Trista’s Workout Plan
Since she had a C-section, Trista had to wait 6 weeks before she could start working out. Her workouts now consist of Power lifting exercises and Pilates.

Warm up. A 5 minutes on the treadmill at 3 mph and an incline of 5

Circuit Training. 3 sets, 12 reps of the following 3 exercises.
1. Squats on a stability ball with overhead arm extensions
2. Walking dumbbell lunges and hamstring curls on an exercise ball
3. Fast walks on treadmill for 1 minute

Abs. 3 sets of 12-15 reps of midsection moves (crunches on a stability disc or lower-ab pelvis rolls) with one minute on a treadmill.

Trista’s Diet
It’s a 2100 calorie-a-day diet, spread over 6 meals per day

Breakfast- whole grain and flax toast, with jam and 1/2 cup mixed berries
Snack - French Vanilla Crisp Pria Bar
Lunch - Turkey sandwich with cheese on whole grain bread with an apple and 1/2 tablespoon peanut butter
Snack - Berry Shake
Dinner - Veggie lasagna made with skim milk ricotta and mozzarella cheese, and a salad with 1 tbsp balsamic vinaigrette
Snack - Rice Krispies Treat

Trista is doing great. Since she’s breast feeding the higher calorie intake makes sense. Looking over her diet, she could stand to cut out the refined sugar. Case in point, the Rice Krispie treats are a no-no in my book. The high sugar content will fuel cravings by causing her blood sugar to spike and plummet. It will also lead to a pro-inflammatory state which is something she is just recovering from, given that she had gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.

Her fitness routine has got a good mix of stability work which will help recruit new muscle fibers helping prevent what I call muscle toning fade. This is where you don’t mix up your routines causing your body to “adapt” so you don’t get the same benefit with subsequent sessions. Mixing up your routines with stability work will help prevent this. She’s also got a variant of interval training which is going to help rev up her fat burning metabolism.

Trista will be back in her skinny jeans for sure!

Rocco Dispirito lost weight on Atkins!? Total heresy I say. This guy grew up on pasta! Rocco jump started his weight loss on Atkins for 1 1/2 months, losing 30 lbs. Now back to a more normal diet, Rocco limits sugar and eats lots of salads. He’s also started competing in triathlons.

For those of you who may not remember, Rocco got his “break” with the reality TV series “The Restaurant.” The series didn’t last too long, and the food didn’t frankly look that good, but Rocco still makes the rounds on QVC, the Food Network and various morning shows.

As many of you know, much of the initial weight loss on Atkins is water loss because as you go into ketosis you deplete glycogen stores which hold on to water. After that, Atkins does result in “real” weight loss. Personally I believe Atkins is easier to follow than most diets, because in our overly processed world it’s easy to “throw out the bun and eat the burger.” Or in Rocco’s case throw out the pasta. Finding veggie and fruit options at fast food restaurants for instance, is a lot harder proposition. By cutting out the carbs (refined carbs) you are essentially cutting out some of the most calorie dense foods (cakes, breads, cookies etc) in the American diet. So what a lot of people don’t realize is that on an Atkins diet you are essentially cutting back on calories. The problem with Atkins is that although it may be easier to follow, it’s too high in animal protein which causes cancer, heart disease, and osteoporosis. Interestingly, although many people report some initial success with the diet, only 1% of people who have on average lost 70 lbs and kept it off for 6 years report using an Atkins style diet.

As for Rocco, never trust a skinny chef:)

R&B and soul singer, Jill Scott has certainly experienced the ups and downs in her weight the past year. In addition to winning 2 Grammy’s, she’s got her big Hollywood break by getting a role in the move “Why did I get married?” which began filming in February. She had just lost 28 lbs by biking prior to signing up for the movie, but in preparation for her upcoming role she was told to gain 30 lbs…. and also “wear a fat suit.”

So Jill fattened up on chocolate, cheesesteaks and milk shakes to go from size 12 jeans to size 18. She is losing the weight by walking 90 minutes and eating salads and seafood. Jill has since lost about 10 lbs and her goal is a size 14.

Eat junk food to gain weight and eat healthy to lose. Highly processed foods, such as junk food, are also almost universally high in calories. Foods that are not as processed not only are healthier but will also help you lose weight. Healthy food in, results in weight loss, health, and a slim figure out.

Ben Affleck says his strategy to lose weight is working out, avoid late night eating and “”lay off the bread.” That sounds like good advice to me. Bread gets everyone in trouble because it’s high in calories and contains very little water. You should “eat your water” meaning that foods with a high water content will help fill you up on fewer calories. Think veggies and fruits. Additionally, if you eat more refined carbs such as white bread, it will fuel cravings by causing your blood sugar to spike and plummet. That’s why if you’re going to eat bread, whole wheat with its fiber is the way to go. The fiber adds some low cal bulk and helps curb hunger. But bread, whether it’s white or whole grain, has still got a lot of calories, so portion control is always going to be key.

Btw, I also posted on Jennifer Garnier’s diet and workout previously.
