Trista Sutter, the former Bachelor and Bachelorette reality TV star, is on a mission to lose her post-baby weight. She recently gave birth to a healthy baby boy, Max, one month early by C-section due to pregnancy complications. Her pregnancy was a rough one, with Trista not only developing gestational diabetes, but also HELLP syndrome, a serious complication of preeclampsia (hypertension associated with protein in the urine) marked by elevated liver enzymes, low red blood cells and platelets. Both Trista and baby are doing fine now. The 5 foot 2 mom, lost 22 lbs so far and currently wears a size 4 and weighs 116 lbs. Her goal is to drop another 10 and get back in her skinny jeans!

Trista’s Workout Plan
Since she had a C-section, Trista had to wait 6 weeks before she could start working out. Her workouts now consist of Power lifting exercises and Pilates.

Warm up. A 5 minutes on the treadmill at 3 mph and an incline of 5

Circuit Training. 3 sets, 12 reps of the following 3 exercises.
1. Squats on a stability ball with overhead arm extensions
2. Walking dumbbell lunges and hamstring curls on an exercise ball
3. Fast walks on treadmill for 1 minute

Abs. 3 sets of 12-15 reps of midsection moves (crunches on a stability disc or lower-ab pelvis rolls) with one minute on a treadmill.

Trista’s Diet
It’s a 2100 calorie-a-day diet, spread over 6 meals per day

Breakfast- whole grain and flax toast, with jam and 1/2 cup mixed berries
Snack - French Vanilla Crisp Pria Bar
Lunch - Turkey sandwich with cheese on whole grain bread with an apple and 1/2 tablespoon peanut butter
Snack - Berry Shake
Dinner - Veggie lasagna made with skim milk ricotta and mozzarella cheese, and a salad with 1 tbsp balsamic vinaigrette
Snack - Rice Krispies Treat

Trista is doing great. Since she’s breast feeding the higher calorie intake makes sense. Looking over her diet, she could stand to cut out the refined sugar. Case in point, the Rice Krispie treats are a no-no in my book. The high sugar content will fuel cravings by causing her blood sugar to spike and plummet. It will also lead to a pro-inflammatory state which is something she is just recovering from, given that she had gestational diabetes and preeclampsia.

Her fitness routine has got a good mix of stability work which will help recruit new muscle fibers helping prevent what I call muscle toning fade. This is where you don’t mix up your routines causing your body to “adapt” so you don’t get the same benefit with subsequent sessions. Mixing up your routines with stability work will help prevent this. She’s also got a variant of interval training which is going to help rev up her fat burning metabolism.

Trista will be back in her skinny jeans for sure!

Jane Seymour lost 20 lbs while training on Dancing with the Stars! Now this is one celeb that I think we can all agree doesn’t need to lose weight. In fact, Jane has been trying to put on weight recently. Now why is it that Jane Seymour feels she needs to put on weight while other celebs are having trouble losing?

Let’s take a look at her diet. Her diet consists of fresh fruits and veggies and some lean protein. She also stays away from sodas and alcohol. The secret to understanding successful weight loss is to reflect on how we evolved as a species. I can tell you, it wasn’t on trans-fats, refined carbs (white flour products), cheese, prime rib, coke, gummi bears etc. Our food consisted of mainly veggies, fruits, legumes, nuts, and occasional lean protein. Stick with this main principle and you’ll understand how to lose a lot of weight. Generally the less processed the foods you eat, the healthier and thinner you will be.

Suddenly with all the training, Jane can’t keep the weight on. I’m not surprised.

I recently profiled Mel B, aka Scary Spice who is now strutting her stuff on Dancing with the Stars, for saying that she didn’t diet or count calories. However, it’s clear that her diet of fruits, veggies, lean meats and whole grains, is healthy and frankly looks like a typical “diet” to me. For someone who says she doesn’t “diet,” she does report using a dieting trick. Her secret is the cold water diet.

Mel B says she burns more calories by drinking cold water with all her meals because the body uses energy to heat up the water during digestion. So does it work? Theoretically yes, practically not very much. Yes it’s true that you’ll burn 4 % more calories drinking ice cold water over the course of an hour, and at 3 glasses of ice cold classes of water per day, you could theoretically lose 2-3 pounds after a year. Drinking room temperature water will not increase your metabolism, so there is a small theoretical benefit to cold water. I say small because you’re better off concentrating on your diet than drinking cold water.

I am always taken aback by all the “spin.” First it’s I don’t diet, but here I use this diet trick. Well, Mel B may actually believe this but it sends the wrong message to those trying to lose weight. The magazines are always trying to “spin” a new angle on a diet. Unfortunately, potential dieters may get the wrong impression and jump on the latest quick fix only to be disappointed. A good healthy diet is still the key to successful weight loss, by far… And I do recommend drinking water, just don’t expect miracles.

Well, I’m sure you’ve heard about “Veggie Gate.” Jerry Seinfeld’s wife’s new cookbook, Deceptively Delicious, has gotten a lot of buzz stemming from her recent Oprah appearance. Problem is the cookbook, which hides veggie purees in comfort foods such as butternut squash in mac and cheese, and spinach in brownies, is remarkable similar to another book by Missy Chase Lapine’s “The Sneaky Chef: Simple Strategies for Hiding Healthy Foods in Kids’ Favorite Meals” which came out several months before in April. Not only are the concepts similar but so are the actual recipes. In addition to the ones mentioned before other similarities include grilled cheese and sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes and cauliflower, pureed spinach and green eggs, and hidden carrot tacos.

And it gets stickier when we learn that Lapine’s book was rejected by the publisher of Jessica Seinfeld’s controversial book, Harper Collins, not once but twice. But let’s not shed tears for Ms. Lapine. She’s a very savvy marketer herself having been the former editor of Eating Well magazine so she knows the ins and outs of the publishing world. And in the publishing world, it’s all about being an A-lister and having a platform. While Jessica Seinfeld is no A-lister herself, she’s married to one of the biggest. She’s got a good look and is highly marketable with the Seinfeld connection, so I’m sure the folks at Harper were drooling over this book deal. Jerry Seinfeld has been on Oprah’s show before, so getting Oprah to plug the book was a given.

Ms. Lapine is crying foul now because she was also pitching her concept to Oprah only to be upstaged by Jeffy Seinfeld’s wife. Also, controversy sells and I’m sure that sales of Ms. Lapine’s book are higher than they ever would have been without “Veggie Gate.” However, before we all give credit to Ms. Lapine, there is one problem. Both books look similar to a book published in 2003 called Kid Favorites Made Healthy: 150 Delicious Recipes Kids Can’t Resist, which also btw, has healthy versions of mac and cheese and chicken nuggets. So who’s copying who? Whether or not Jessica actually reviewed Missy’s book before she published her own is debatable, but every idea is derivative especially in the food and recipe world.

As far as the premise for both books, I have to tell you I’m not excited. Throwing some veggie purees in junk food while making them healthier, is not the same as healthy. I saw her chicken nuggets recipe on the Oprah show and it didn’t strike me that adding a spinach puree for the chicken coating would really add that much nutritional value since the whole thing was deep fried. These books offer a false promise and fail to deliver. It’s akin to transitioning a drug addict to methadone. Transitioning kids from junk food junkies to veggie-puree junk food junkies is not teaching kids to eat healthy. It’s the wrong message. You can’t have your junk and eat it too.

R&B and soul singer, Jill Scott has certainly experienced the ups and downs in her weight the past year. In addition to winning 2 Grammy’s, she’s got her big Hollywood break by getting a role in the move “Why did I get married?” which began filming in February. She had just lost 28 lbs by biking prior to signing up for the movie, but in preparation for her upcoming role she was told to gain 30 lbs…. and also “wear a fat suit.”

So Jill fattened up on chocolate, cheesesteaks and milk shakes to go from size 12 jeans to size 18. She is losing the weight by walking 90 minutes and eating salads and seafood. Jill has since lost about 10 lbs and her goal is a size 14.

Eat junk food to gain weight and eat healthy to lose. Highly processed foods, such as junk food, are also almost universally high in calories. Foods that are not as processed not only are healthier but will also help you lose weight. Healthy food in, results in weight loss, health, and a slim figure out.

Ben Affleck says his strategy to lose weight is working out, avoid late night eating and “”lay off the bread.” That sounds like good advice to me. Bread gets everyone in trouble because it’s high in calories and contains very little water. You should “eat your water” meaning that foods with a high water content will help fill you up on fewer calories. Think veggies and fruits. Additionally, if you eat more refined carbs such as white bread, it will fuel cravings by causing your blood sugar to spike and plummet. That’s why if you’re going to eat bread, whole wheat with its fiber is the way to go. The fiber adds some low cal bulk and helps curb hunger. But bread, whether it’s white or whole grain, has still got a lot of calories, so portion control is always going to be key.

Btw, I also posted on Jennifer Garnier’s diet and workout previously.

After a year of reviewing celebs and their diets, I felt it was high time to give my take on the best and the worst in celebrity diets for 2007. This year’s crop of celebrity diets proves the adage “you are what you eat.” Diets full of fruits and veggies have helped trim down Hollywood’s biggest “losers.” This “best” list of celebs also shows that you don’t have to knock yourself out at the gym to get fabulous. This year it’s all about healthy lifestyle activities with Ricki Lake, Andrea Baptiste and Lenny Clarke getting active by walking, hiking and biking.

Brittany Spears, Beyonce and Ashanti top the worst list by resorting to quick fix weight loss schemes. Diet pills and fasting “detox” diets only give dieters false hope, resulting in rebounding weight and yo-yo dieting. Under the body-conscious spotlight of the media, this list proves that eating well and creating a healthy lifestyle are the best revenge.

The Best Celebrity Diet List for 2007:
4. Jessica Simpson: Jessica got back her daisy dukes, shedding 25 lbs on a 5 Factor diet of lean protein, good carbs, healthy fats and fiber along with circuit and weight training.

3. Andrea Baptiste: She lost 56 lbs on The Biggest Loser and has since dropped another 8 pounds, proving not all weight loss reality TV contestants gain weight back. She continues to “lose” by daily walking and running along with a low fat and low refined-carbohydrate diet.

2. Lenny Clarke: The Rescue Me star has rescued himself, losing 144 lbs with the help of Weight Watchers and a diet of salads, fresh fruit and fish along with swimming and biking.

1. Ricki Lake: A former serial and yo-yo dieter, Ricki downsized from 250 lbs in 1991 to her present svelte 123 lbs by using a food delivery service to limit calories, daily hiking and frequent weigh-ins.

And the Worst Celebrity Diets for 2007:
4. Kirstie Alley: It’s time for Kirstie to call Jenny collect. Processed sugars fuel cravings which may make her diet difficult to stick with.

3. Dr. Phil McGraw: Is the tough-love author of The Ultimate Weight Loss Solution obese? Recent reports of his weight gain show even self-help gurus have trouble following their own advice.

2. Beyonce and Ashanti: Divas shouldn’t let divas do the Master Cleanse (aka the Lemonade Diet). Fasting “detox” diets wreak havoc on the metabolism and when stopped, more calories are stored as fat, so you not only re-gain weight but become proportionally fatter.

1. Britney Spears: Junk food and a quick-fix lifestyle of diet pills and energy drinks caught up with her at the recent Video Music Awards and had everyone thinking “Give Me Less.”

Since the birth of her second child Angel, in April of this year, Mel B or better known as scary spice has since lost 40 lbs of her baby weight. And she claims she did it without dieting. Instead she got to work with a trainer less than a week after giving birth. And lately she has been burning up the dance floor on Dancing in with the Stars, putting in 6 hour training days for the past 6 weeks. Mel B says

“I don’t believe in diets, I believe in listening to your body and being consistent. If you want a burger, have one, but balance it out the next day by eating salmon and vegetables.”

Mel B’s “I don’t diet” Diet
Mel says she doesn’t believe in diets or counting calories. She has 3 meals and 2 snacks per day consisting mostly of fruits, veggies and lean meats like turkey and fish along with whole grains like brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

Celeb Diet Doctor Weigh In…
News flash. Mel B does diet. While you can lose weight with exercise alone, many studies show that weight loss stemming from exercise alone is quite modest (a couple of pounds) compared with diet and exercise. The role of exercise and diet in weight loss are different. Generally speaking you lose weight through diet and you keep it off with exercise, as exercise is one of the strongest predictors of lasting weight loss.

Mel B is on a “diet.” It’s big on fruits and veggies which is one of the best ways to fuel weight loss. Add to this some lean protein to curb hunger and she’s got the makings of a sensible diet that will lead to consistent weight loss. So don’t be fooled by stars that say they don’t diet, they do.

“Never say diet” according to the latest Shape Mag. Hmmm… I am always amused by such statements and looking at what Heather Graham eats, I can say without hesitation she does diet, but doesn’t know it. While there may be some extraordinary individuals who can eat whatever they want without gaining weight, for 99.49% of the population this does not hold true. A self described foodie, Heather Graham loves healthy Mexican and Japanese dishes.

Here’s one of Heather’s favorite recipes:

Heather’s Favorite Broccoli Recipe
While making a film in Dublin, Ireland last year, Heather got addicted to this crunch dish from Avoca Café.

Serves: 4
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 5-7 minutes
Nutrition Score per serving:
(2 cups): 285 calories, 22 g fat (69% of calories), 4 g sat fat, 17 g carbs, 10 g protein, 7 g fiber, 176 mg calcium, 3 mg iron, 370 mg sodium

Ingredients
¾ cup hazelnuts
6 cups broccoli florets (bite size)
1 ½ cups cherry tomatoes, halved
4 oz feta cheese
¼ cup reduced-fat French dressing
Freshly ground pepper (optional)

Directions
Preheat oven to 350°F. Spread hazelnuts on a shallow pan and bake for 5 to 7 minutes or until golden brown. Rub off the skins with a clean kitchen towel and allow to cool.In a large mixing bowl, add broccoli, cherry tomatoes, and cheese. Add nuts once they’ve cooled. Pour on the dressing and toss gently to combine.

Celeb Diet Doctor Weigh In…
Here’s the deal. As a healthy foodie, Heather can control what goes in her dishes and judging by her recipe she’s eating low cal. People often get in trouble when they eat out because there are a lot of added stealth calories. The more you can prepare your meals at home the better you’ll be at controlling your calorie intake.

Heather works out on a daily basis and it shows. She says “I’ve been practicing yoga five days a week for 11 years. About two years ago I realized my stomach was kind of mushy, so I started doing Pilates twice a week to strengthen my abs. Now it feels and looks much more toned.” She also uses Transcendental Meditation to help her de-stress.

Heather, who is 37 btw, has got the bod of a woman in her 20’s. Her recipe of yoga and Pilates, along with being a healthy foodie is obviously paying off.
