Dieters looking for a natural supplement to help keep their weight-loss food plan on track might find it in chickpeas. Australian researchers from the University of Tasmania found that the garbanzo bean has pretty positive effects on bowel health and satiation.
Forty-two participants were studied over the course of 20 weeks: the first four weeks they were instructed to eat their usual diet; during the next 12 weeks participants supplemented their diet with chickpeas; and for the last four weeks they followed their regular diet without consuming chickpeas.
During the chickpea phase, participants ate less food especially cereals. Participants also said they felt more satiated and their bowel functions improved. However, after the chickpeas phase when participants stopped supplementing their diets with the bean, they ate more processed snack foods that were high in energy but low in fiber.
Chickpeas, which contain 5g of fiber and 7g protein, are edible legumes originating from the Middle East. They are also a great source of zinc and protein, are low in polyunsaturated fat, and are a healthy source of carbohydrates for diabetics.
