It seems the Chinese are dangerously cutting corners to reduce the production costs of flour. Reports have surfaced that manufacturing companies are adding pulverized lime to bleaching agents used in Chinese flour after whistle blowers at the companies came forward out of concern for the country’s health.
Apparently as much as 30% of pulverized lime is being added to the bleaching agents, which are added to the flour to shorten the time needed for whitening. Cornstarch (a blend of corn flour and benzoyl peroxide) is usually used in bleaching agents, but pulverized lime has become a cheaper substitute. However, consuming pulverized lime (an inedible substance) gradually damages the lungs and ultimately the entire respiratory system.
Whistle blowers for Yuzhong Food Additive Company in Rugao in East China’s Jiangsu province says the company has added 1.1 lbs of pulverized lime to every 4.4lbs of bleaching agent. Although there is no explicit law banning the use of pulverized lime as an additive, some experts say it is definitely forbidden.
