Dalai Lama’s Diet Includes Meat?

by Shannon on October 20, 2010

Considering the Dalai Lama is the most famous monk in the world, it may be hard to comprehend the fact that the Dalai Lama is a carnivore.  That’s right folks, he does eat meat.

The 75 year old Bhudist monk, along with his nephew Tenzin Takhla recently gave an interview, during which he dished all about his diet habits within his daily routine and they revealed, that contrary to what most monks do–avoid meat because it involves the killing of a sentient being– the Dalai Lama actually eats it.

In the 1960s, he tried it for a bit but had to give it up after he got sick with hepatitis,” explains Takhla.

But, apparently it proved harder than he thought to give up the carnivorous habit.  So, instead, he eats only vegetarian meals when he is in Dharamsala and meat dishes when he is traveling if that is what his hosts are serving.

Now that you have a little background, take a look at the Dalai Lama’s typical menu:

Breakfast
black tea
cornflakes with milk
porridge
Tibetan bread with jam
fruits like papaya

Lunch
rice
steamed dumplings
cooked vegetables such as eggplant, potatoes or peas

Dinner
The Lama does not eat dinner.
