Eating Healthy On A Budget

by Dr Marc on September 14, 2008

I just got back from my local produce market and grabbed a couple days worth of groceries. Here’s my tip on where to go for your produce. If there is a large Russian clientele you’re in the right place. Don’t ask me why, all I can tell you is that Russians know where to go!

Here’s what I got: 2 leeks, 1 pint raspberries, 4 limes, 3 yellow onions, 3 kiwis, 2 red peppers, 1 fennel, 5 carrots, 5 Roma tomatoes, 1 cantaloupe, 1 purple cabbage, 1 shallot bulb, 1 bunch of scallions, 1 cauliflower head, 1 eggplant, and 4 bananas. So what’s the grand total?

$17.65

When you eat unprocessed foods you’ll lose a lot of weight, get healthier and save beaucoup money! Of course you could always go to Whole Paycheck aka “Whole Foods” and needlessly blow through a lot of money and have little to show for it.

When you shop like this you’ll be eating healthier and losing weight more effectively than 99.99 44/100 % of all Americans… and all the celebs too!

I don’t shop at Whole Food much, but my “ferocious” appetite did cost me about $140 yesterday for one week’s worth at the Ferry Plaza. I bought broccoli, green-yellow-purple beans, salmon, sardine, grapes of three varieties, black berries, strawberries, paw paw, Chinese dates, half of a chicken, watermelon turnip, purple potato, DHA eggs, apples, okra, cilantro, figs of two varieties, seaweed vegetable, crimini mushrooms, 2 bunches of chard of two varieties, and some Haas avocados. Of course, this does not include any whole grains, beans, or other ingredients that I have on hand.

Although I am trying to trim down on my grocery bill, it has become a challenge, partly because my body needs to “re-fuel” every 2-3 hours. I am neither overweight or obese but I think alot, so maybe that’s why I eat alot. Breakfast alone accounts for 1000 calories, which I break up into 3 settings.

I was reading some of the blogs on Buddyslim and was amazed at how many thought fruits and vegetables were expensive; yet many of them could still afford to buy new clothes. Very sad.

I'm going to tell you a secret that doctors and dentists don't tell their patients. It's one of the "dirtiest" secrets I know.

An x-ray produces lots of free radicals and are especially harmful to rapidly dividing cells, such as an egg and a sperm. If you can avoid an x-ray, avoid it. But good luck in talking your dentist out of it. Even though the gonads are covered during an x-ray, no one knows how effective those protective coverings are.

Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants that protect from those free radicals, and one should EAT LOTS of fruits and vegetables BEFORE and AFTER going in for an x-ray.

To show you just how dangerous an x-ray, here's a photo of a radiologist who developed a malignant disease after 3 year in using the x-ray machine.

NOTE: It's GRAPHIC.
