Ellen DeGeneres Tests the Shake Weight
Last week talk show host and stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres featured new workout equipment on her show – the Shake Weight. DeGeneres, who is a notorious infomercial addict on the lookout for new hot products for her talk show, demoed the tool and even asked her guest, Queen Latifah, for her thoughts.
The Shake Weight uses a technology called Dynamic Inertia. The shaking movement of the dumbbell fires up your arm, shoulder and chest muscles, and apparently you only need to use it for 6 minutes every day to feel results.
“An independent scientific study shows that the Shake Weight causes over 300% more EMG activity than the traditional dumbbells of the same weight,” a statement on the Shake Weight’s website says. “This is a result of the unique motion of the exercise, isometric contraction of the entire upper body required during use of the Shake Weight and the rapid pace of the muscle fatigue caused by one unique movement.”

Interesting contraption. My advice is to stick to walking to lose weight.

Diet Doctor,
Your reply to this post makes no sense. The device is supposed to be used for toning and sculpting muscle – not weight loss.

Saw the commercial, read the gadget review here, and decided to give it a try. (Bought from WalMart with the free DVD for $19, WAY less than the commercial is advertising for.)
Based on the footage of people using the Shake Weight, I was led to believe that the device was mechanical, doing the shaking for you. BOY WAS I WRONG!
Upon listening carefully to the commercial again, it tells you that it is a “manual device which requires no batteries.” I was deceived by the toned beauties on the commercial shaking the weight in very small movements which looked mechanical! LOL
To its credit, I have used it for about 2 minutes and I am already “feeling it” in my arms. I’m still not sold and am keeping my receipt, but am willing to give it a try.
