The inside skinny... on Fat Smash Diet Review

Fat Smash Diet Review

fat-smash-dietThe Fat Smash Diet was developed by physician Ian Smith to help celebrities lose weight on the TV reality series, Celebrity Fit Club. The first thing that strikes you about the Fat Smash Diet book is it’s thin on content. Only 56 sparsely-written pages outline the diet plan, with the remaining 87 pages devoted to recipes. It’s a 90 day diet plan organized into 4 phases: detox, foundation, construction, and the temple.

Phase 1, Detox
The Detox portion lasts for 9 days and is devoted to mostly fruits and veggies to clean the body of “impurities” without putting “toxins” in your body. Although he does not provide an explanation, no white potatoes or avocados are allowed in this phase presumably due to the high glycemic index in the former and the high caloric content of the latter. This phase allows for brown rice, some dairy including low-fat or skim milk, yogurt and egg whites.

Phase 2, Foundation
Higher calorie foods such as meat, cheese and cereals are introduced with attention to portion control. This phase runs till week 4.

Phase 3, Construction
A lot like phase 2 with slightly larger portion sizes this phase lasts 4 weeks. More carbs are allowed in this phase including whole wheat pasta, cookies and crackers.

Phase 4, Temple
Other food indulgences are re-introduced including french fries, white rice, larger cheese portion sizes, and calorie-containing drinks (beer, wine, and milk shakes).

When graduating to higher phases, Dr Ian is careful to point out that portion control is essential when adding back these higher calorie foods. Should you gain weight in Phase 4, he suggests going back to Phase 1 to get back on track.

The premise for the Fat Smash diet is sound with an emphasis on fruits and veggies in phase 1 and adding lean meats, seafoods and grains in the later phases. However the book is so brief and poorly organized you get the feeling it was hastily written over a weekend. In short the Fat Smash Diet, although promising, fails to deliver.
