French Lose Weight With Cooking Classes
The French may not have as big an obesity problem as the United States has, but they’re definitely fighting the war against it with more common sense and practical methods. Hospitals in the European country, which treat patients for obesity-related issues, are introducing cooking classes to help their patients really make a lifestyle change.
Although only 1 in 6 French citizens are obese (compared to 1 in 3 in the US, and 1 in 4 in the UK), public hospitals are teaching its patients that they don’t need to be put on a diet to lose weight – they should opted for healthy home-cooked 3-course-meals instead of snacking in front of the TV on ready-made dinners.
“Enjoying food, variety in food, the culture of food are the best defenses against obesity,” Dr Arnaud Basdevant, head of the nutrition department at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in Paris, told the BBC. “When you really enjoy good quality food, it sounds strange but you tend to eat less.”
When it comes to recipes, patients are being taught how to prepare balanced meals, and using healthier alternatives like steaming vegetables in water instead of cooking with oil or butter.
“Our approach isn’t to restrict people or to put France on a diet. On the contrary, we try to keep the variety, the pleasure and the conviviality, with high-quality products.”
