Vegans get wrapped out with the notion that meat is bad and screws up their digestive systems. In some sense, yes, but in some sense the vegan diet can just be as harmful.

1) Say a vegan child develops "strep throat". The odds of that parent bring that child immediately to the doctor for antibiotics are almost nil. Vegans believe in the "natural" state of health. They generally do not believe in antibiotics as this will upset the digestive flora. So if the parent thinks probiotic is more beneficial and will heal, this is not good. While strep throat will heal naturally, the longer it takes to heal, the more damage strep throat will do to the kidneys and to the heart. This is how some people develop heart murmurs later in life because of the scarring of the heart valves. Strep throat is an inflammatory disease and really should be treated as a 911.

2) Protein is an issue with vegans. They have to consume enormous amounts to get the same benefits that meat eaters do. When they don't get enough proteins, their hormones will go out of whack. A female, for instance, will experience amenorrhea. A man will not make enough testosterone, and there are male vegans who sound and look feminine. While they may not see this as an issue, they are really screwing up their endocrine systems. Hormones not only help shape the body but also produce cortisols, the body's natural form of "hydrocortisone" or "Prednisone" needed to fight inflammatory diseases including colds, rashes, infections, just to name a few. Protein is food to over 400 hormones. Not eating enough of the the right amino acids is like starving these hormones. Anti-diuretic hormone, for instance, regulates how frequent people "pee". In an alcoholic, this hormone is turned off. The alcoholic will "pee" so much that he or she becomes dehydrated that the next morning, a hang over will result.

There are other issues, but this should illustrate some of the dangers with a vegan diet.
