Jamie Oliver Talks ‘Food Revolution’ with Oprah

by Betsy on Celebs on March 30, 2010

Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver recently aired a new series in the US called, Food Revolution. In the program he is trying to persuade Huntington, Virginia (the fattest town in the US) to eat healthy. When episode one of the six-part series was filmed Jamie was devestated and actually broke down in tears as he felt his campaign was failing.

In the past week he has appeared on David Letterman and the Oprah Winfrey show to promote his program and get people thinking about healthy living. Of course, once you get on the Oprah show things are sure to turn around. Just hours after he appeared on the Oprah show a total of 7.5 million people watched the first of the six-part series. His cooking rival, Gordon Ramsay, only pulled 4.3 million viewers for his show, Kitchen Nightmares.

While speaking with Oprah, Jamie told her about his struggles in Huntington. For example, in one high school he caused a riot when he convinced the kitchen to take french fries off the menu. In another episode, he showed kids how chicken carcasses were used to make nuggets, and the kids still wanted to eat it! Here’s what he was able to accomplish in a similar city in England:

“I don’t think I’m Superman, however, I’ve got hindsight on my side. Four hours of TV back home got a billion dollars from the British government, got rubbish in vending machines taken out, got new standards, fresh produce, local food and we’re on the beginning of transition of change.”

Jamie hopes to inspire American parents to get serious about voicing their concerns and making sure the kids in the US are well taken care of in the public school system.

Celeb Diet Doc Says…
As a student who ate his way through the public school system in NYC, I can attest to the fact the food was horrible…. .mystery meat… green peas (should have been called grey peas by the looks of things)… salad was iceberg lettuce with a cherry tomato drenched in French Dressing (well at least it started off healthy??). Kudos to Jamie and hopefully it leads to some changes.. but I have a feeling the french fries will be back.
