Jennifer Hudson: Vogue Cover Girl

jennifer-hudson.jpg

Jennifer Hudson, the American idol finalist and Oscar winner, recently graced the cover of Vogue magazine. Known for it’s traditional wafer-thin models, Jennifer shows that big is beautiful. Unbelievably this is only the third time that an African American women, let alone a women of size, has been on the cover of Vogue in it’s 115 year history- which makes me think that Vogue is still in the dark ages.

The shots of Hudson, taken at the Apollo theater by celeb photographer Annie Leibovitz, were widely criticized on the net. While I’m surprised a photographer of Annie’s stature could not inject more glamor and creativity into the spread, it’s a step in the right direction for the fashion world.

This could’ve been a beautiful and classy photo of Jennifer. I expected more from an upscale magazine like Vogue. Jennifer is an Oscar winner and this was her first shoot with Vogue. Her hair is wild, her mouth is wide open and her breasts are hanging out. I’m an African American woman and I say thanks for nothing Vogue!

Women of color could use a few more covers in the next 115 years. Times have changed. Beauty comes in all sizes, shapes and colors especially in the world of glamour. Represent true beauty. And the African American women is classy too, not just wild and sexy.
