Laker’s star Kobe Bryant must prepare year round to be in the kind of shape he is in when it comes game time. He shared what he focuses on during season and off season.
During the season, I focus a lot on weight training, obviously building up my strength level as the season progresses. In the off season, it’s about getting stronger as well, more agile. Also, conditioning plays an important part in that, because you want to make sure you come into the upcoming season in tip-top shape. Then, obviously, you want to get on the basketball floor and work your skills,” says Kobe.
Off season workouts for him also include a lot of Olympic lifts, as he called them, and track work. It consists of clean pulls, dead lifts, Romanian dead lifts, back squats, etc. He says it is important to bulk up but also keep up the energy levels so during the game season he uses a combination of lifting weights and conditioning exercises. He says that stamina is especially important during the finals and that no matter what kind of conditioning exercises a person uses, pain must be felt in order for it to work, that one must feel the lungs burning.
When I get on the basketball floor, it’s about fine-tuning my skills, it’s not about conditioning. My conditioning comes from just running, whether it’s on a track, or on a field, or on the court itself, just doing suicides or sprints,” Kobe also said.
Additionally, he said that his workouts have become more efficient since he first started his NBA career. It is obviously working as Kobe added another championship ring to his collection.
