The inside skinny... on Magda Szubanski: Weight Loss

Magda Szubanski: Weight Loss

Magda Szubanski is an Australian comedian and actress best know for her role in the original Kath and Kim.  After years of being morbidly obese she decided to become a spokesperson for Jenny Craig and lose the weight.  Over the past months the whole country has cheered her on as she is a favorite in the hearts of Australians.  This week she revealed she has reached her goal and lost 55 pounds which is 8 dress sizes for her small frame.  She said,
“I feel like I’ve climbed Mt Everest,” said Szubanski, 48. “I can honestly say, I can’t remember a time in my life when I felt better.”
She continues,
“I just feel so well and have so much energy, not just for exercise, but for life,” she says. “(And) that niggling worry that used to be there sabotaging everything I did, that anxiety is gone.”
Before losing the weight she experienced sleep apnoea, a bad back, hip and knee pain and a recurring lung infection.  Now, Magda is enjoying going to shops, buying things off the rack and experiencing the freedom of being thin.
Other Jenny Craig celebrities spokespeople include Valerie Bertinelli and Marie Osmond who have kept the weight off, but then people like Kirsty Alley seem to still be yo-yoing.  Let’s hope Magda is ready for the challenge.

I have been trying to find out what height Magda Szubanski is. I don’t believe she is a size 14 and need to put her weight into perspective with her height. Can someone please tell me?

madga is petite and is and always has been beautiful. I am glad she lost the weight because of her health problems. I would like to see her around for a long time. I live in the USA we do not get kath and kim at this time, so I go to the net for my giggles.

85 kgs on a woman who is 5ft or 153cm tall (which Magda is) means that her Body Mass Index (BMI) is over 36, which puts Magda in the Morbidly Obese category.

In fact, there is no way that such an obese person’s dress size is anywhere near a real size 14. In today’s vanity-sizing scale (in Australia), it would be size 18 or 20. Ten years ago, this would equate to size 20 or 22.

I agree that Magda is not a true size 14, as that is my size. I am 75kg, 173cm tall and my BMI is 25. I need to lose weight because I feel fat and disgusting at size 14 and certainly not fit or foxy

I am disappointed with this article on Magda in Women’s Weekly. Whatever size she truly is now it is not enough – I am disappointed that Jenny Craig would allow her a ‘goal weight’ to still have her within the ‘obese’ range for her height (1.58m). She is still in the high-risk area and causing undue stress on her body. I salute Magda for her efforts thus far, and I was impressed that she isn’t trying to be a ‘biggest loser’ from overweight to personal trainer type person, however, so far she hasn’t completed her journey and her reaching an still morbidly unhealthy ‘goal weight’ is a ridiculous milestone for Jenny Craig and Women’s Weekly to be celebrating.

I dispair at the knockers at Magda’s weight loss. Women are so into self loathing they have forgotten what is really important. At 85kg when she is fitter, happier and learning progressively how to eat and exercise is this not the main goal for all of us who struggle with eating disorders and seditary lifestyles. Which could be said is the majority of women in Australia regardless of our size. Lets encourage ourselves and each other just and celebrate the small daily steps to better health. Thats what gets you there in the end.

    As a former horseracing jockey I never struggled with my weight by applying the following balanced food intake formula;

    15% fats, 35% sugars, 50% proteins.

If your physical activity is low, don’t exceed 1200 calories a day, it it is high you can go up till 2200 calories a day always implementing the above formula.

Overweight will melt away week after week.

On the Jenny Craig website it says that Magda is 158cms. Therefore, at 85kgs she has a BMI of 36. A BMI of 30 or over is obese! And thats exactly how she looks! She still needs to lose 20+ kgs to be in a healthy weight range, which she obviously can’t do with Jenny Craig! How can she be on maintenance when she is a VMI of 36??

I’m not going to get into the debate at whether Magda’s weight loss is substantial enough to be placed in Woman’s Weekly – I just want to make the point that the BMI is not really a true indicator of obesity. I’m 170 cm and weight 75 kgs – so technically I’m ‘overweight’. But I fit into a size 10. A better estimation of one’s body fat would be skinfolds.

Magda Szubanski is only 153cms (5 feet) tall. I’ve stood right next to her in real life several times and she’s definitely not 158cms as wildly claimed. Until she started weight-loss dieting with Jenny Craig, Magda was a size 26. Her weight-loss publicity photos are all heavily Photoshopped. I saw her recently in our local shops and she’s definitely still very much a size 20. No bull.

For those that are knocking Magda for not having lost ALL her excess weight: she has said in numerous articles that she wants to let her mind catch up with her body, before she decides to lose any more. She is looking at a long-term, sustainable solution.

Jenna and Junebug, it will be interesting to see if you have managed to maintain your respective weight losses after a couple of years.

Magda has made significant improvements to her health especially as exercise has been part of her weight loss plan.

Her biggest struggle now will be to maintain her current weight loss and to learn new ways of thinking. The more she loses the harder it will be to maintain. Previous posters who have lost significant amounts of weight will not be able to speak with any credability until they have maintained for 12 months plus. And as discussed on that show “Why thin people don’t get fat” maintaining that new weight will be tough.

There is noting to stop Magda losing more weight when she is good and ready and after she has maintained her current (huge) loss. And I suspect that being in the public eye Magda will continue to lose weight but will not advertise the fact as it will only put more pressure on herself.

Good on Magda for not falling for the fairy tale and instead taking a more long term approach.
