Marissa Jaret Winokur to Host Weight Loss Dance Show

Marissa Jaret Winokur, who had the starring role in HairSpray as the overweight Tracy Turnblad is signed on to host a new show.  The Oxygen network released their summer lineup last week and one of their shows will be Dance Your Ass Off, it’s similar to Dancing with the Stars but in this series overweight contestants attempt to shed pounds by pairing up with professional dancers while preparing for weekly stage performances ranging from hip-hop and ballroom to pole dancing.

Marissa, who did plenty of dancing in HairSpray and also when she was a contestant on the ABC’s Dancing with the Stars said dancing helped her lose weight. She tells the New York Post,

“When I left Hairspray, I’d lost 60 pounds. When I did Dancing With the Stars I was a plus-size dancer who’d gotten down to the skinniest I ever was.”

Maris confessed she likes Biggest Loser but that this new show is a lot different:

“[Those other shows] are more like boot camps. This isn’t like boot camp. This is people finding their sexuality and embracing life in a different way. They’re finding their femininity or masculinity,” said Winokur. “They dance to the scale — that’s how it’s different than Biggest Loser. It’s not like a walk of shame to the scale.”

During the series, the contestants work with a nutritionist as well to get good dieting advice.  As for the weekly performances they are not only judged on their dance ability but also on their weight loss.

“People love dancing shows and to watch people perform. I always said that when I was on Dancing with the Stars, if I had to get on a scale after, I could never have done it,” said Winokur. “It’s really impressive.”

Dance Your Ass Off will air in June.
