Many women dread having their first child for what it might do to their bodies (never mind the raging hormones), but a new study suggests that women should rather be afraid of coupling up and conceiving.
Annette J. Dobson, a professor of biostatistics at the University of Queensland in Australia, led a study published in the January issue of The American Journal of Preventive Medicine that observed more than 6 000 Australian women between 18 and 23 for 10 years. Over time, the participants each filled out surveys about their weight and height, age, level of education, physical activity, smoking status, alcohol consumption, medications used and other health and health care issues.
After the 10 years, the women who remained single and without a child had only gained 11 pounds. The women who had a partner but no baby gained 15 pounds, while the women had had both a partner and baby gained 20 pounds.
Because falling in love cannot change your metabolic makeup, the scientists reasoned that it was the women’s changed behavior that caused the weight gain. After the 10 years the study also found that more women quite smoking and binge drinking, but exercised less.
“This is a general health concern. Getting married or moving in with a partner and having a baby are events that trigger even further weight gain,” Dobson told the New York Times. “From a prevention point of view, one can look at these as particular times when women need to be especially careful.”
