Meghan McCain Talks Weight and Women in Society

Meghan McCain, the 25-year-old daughter of Senator John McCain, appears to be following in her father’s footsteps as she has been taking on some political and social challenges in the media. Meghan is a blogger for The Daily Beast, and she recently wrote an article on prejudice against women and their weight. She also recently appeared on The View and talked about the issue. Meghan addressed the issue after being publicly ridiculed on Laura Ingraham’s talk show. The conservative pundit Laura Ingraham said that Megan was,
“too plus-sized to be a cast member on the television show The Real World.”
Meghan was surprised that the talk show host wasn’t debating their political differences but instead attacking her physical body. Meghan responded with a Twitter that read,
“To all the curvy girls out there, don’t let anyone make you feel bad about your body. I love my curves and you should love yours too.”
Meghan McCain has used this incident as an opportunity to raise issues about weight in Hollywood and the standards that are set for women to be picture-perfect at all costs. She commented,
“Everyone from Jessica Simpson to Tyra Banks, Oprah Winfrey, and Hillary Clinton has fallen victim to this type of image-oriented bullying. . . . After Kelly Clarkson’s recent appearance on American Idol, the first commentary I read on the Internet was about her weight gain instead of her singing.”

As a McCain supporter it’s fun to see that same spark that that her father has come through in a new generation and in a new manner.
