The inside skinny... on Michael Moore’s Sicko weight loss

Michael Moore’s Sicko weight loss

Michael Moore, the controversial documentary film maker, is out promoting his new film Sicko opening June 29th. In the same vein as “Roger and Me” and “Fahrenheit,” his latest film tackles our health care system and exposes its short comings. Feeling a little “hypocritical” about not taking care of his health and his burgeoning waist line over the years, he recently started the Pritikin diet on the advice of Roger Ebert.

Following the Pritikin diet, he reveals to New Yorker Magazine that he lost 30 lbs over the past 3 months. His advice to others: “What I learned through Pritikin is pretty basic. Like, one common denominator of overweight people is, they don’t get enough sleep. Basically, my advice to the 65 percent of the country that’s overweight is to do three simple things: Get seven to eight hours sleep every night, go for a 45-minute walk each day, and eat at least 35 grams of fiber each day.”

I hope he considers a follow-up film to address the larger health care crisis: obesity in America. Overweight children being placed on diabetic medications. Soda machines in schools. Super sized fast food menus. Come on Michael, what do you say?

The US healthcare system does need revamping but it will take years before any ramifications will take into effect. One of the best actions people can do in the meantime is learn how to eat nutritiously. Learn from a REPUTABLE source. Relying on food service is not a guarantee since profit and loss comes into play. For instance, Yoplait Healthy Heart Cherry Orchard is NOT health food all. It’s loaded with 27g of simple sugar, sugar that gets immediately absorbed into the blood system and make people gain weight faster! A better solution is to buy plain yogurt and add some fresh fruits & sliced almonds to it.

Personally, I believe the root to the obesity epidemic is that people rely too much on modern conveniences. They no longer use a broom to sweep but a blow gun to blow. They fight with each other for the closest parking space to the elevator or to the door. Children are glued to video games instead of participating in outdoor activities. And the biggest culprit is that people no longer cook but rely on food services to feed them. The problem is that they lose control of themselves this way. Meals in restaurants are designed to be tasty, so they can get repeating customers. They are usually calorie dense as oppose to nutrient dense.
