Michelle Obama and Walmart Team up for Health

by Shannon on February 10, 2011

Inspired by Michele Obama‘s Let’s Move Campaign to fight childhood obesity, Walmart has announced that it will be making an effort to be more health conscious.  They plan to do so by using less salts, fats, and sugars in the thousands of products they create. They also intend to lower prices on healthier options like fruit and vegetables.

It is a move that no one saw coming, considering Walmart is one of the biggest corporations to offer food at already low prices and doesn’t seem to be suffering any flack from the public regarding the health of its products.  Yet, they’re undertaking a massive health overhaul, thanks to the First Lady.

“Through her ‘Let’s Move’ campaign she’s reached out and engaged every sector of society that can make a difference on this issue, and that’s exactly the kind of leadership this nation needs,” says Leslie Dach, Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs at Walmart.

In addition to lowering prices and including less unhealthy ingredients in their products, Walmart intends to develop labels that make identifying healthier foods easier.  They also intend to support more nutrition programs.

While Michelle Obama sees Walmart’s move to promote better health as a good thing, it leaves other people worried about how it will affect other grocery chains and businesses that are already struggling to compete with Walmart.  Nonetheless, Michelle speaks highly of the new plans and is even promoting them.

“It’s a victory for parents. It’s a victory for families, but most of all, it’s a victory for our children,” she said.  Today, when I see a company like Walmart launch an initiative like this I feel more hopeful than ever before.”

Walmart CEO, Bill Simon, whole heartedly agrees, saying that the obesity problem and health problems our nation is facing boil down to one basic truth: healthy eating is hard to do because of the lifestyle Americans currently lead.  Their goal is to make healthy eating options more available to the basic public all the way across the board.
