Obama Children’s Lunch Ad Controversy

It’s a simple question “President Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don’t I?” but it’s got the White House in a tizzy. The White House responded with it’s hired guns, Associate Counsel Karen Dunn and Deputy Associate Counsel Ian Bassin, who “made it clear that they viewed this as something that could lead to legal action if I wasn’t responsive”
So what’s the hullabaloo all about? The Physicians for Responsible Medicine (which advocates a vegan lifestyle for better health headed by physician Neal Barnard) put up the signs strategically locating them in the Washington Metro so that all of the Washington commuters would see the poster on their daily commute. Well one it worked and two it’s got the White House on the offensive. It seems according to the White House “mentioning the president’s children was off-limits.”
Their opinion aside, let’s examine what Malia and Sasha are dining on at Sidwell, from what I gather is an uber-exclusive, expensive school for the Capitol’s elite and well-heeled.
Sasha-Lower School
Snack: Grapes & Graham Crackers
Lunch: Cheese Tortellini w/Garden Marinara
Garlic Green Beans
Clementines
Malia-Middle School
Lunch: Corn Chowder
Salad du Jour
Apple Carrot Salad
Vintner’s Salad
Cheese Tortellini w/ Fresh Marinara
Garlic Organic Green Beans
Clementines
Personally, I think it’s a fair question and highlights how pathetic the nation’s public school lunches are. Having grown up in the NYC public school system I can tell you our menu looked nothing like this! In fact, back in the day, ketchup was considered one of the four food groups! Our menu had the usual mystery meat swimming in some watery, oily fluid, trans fat laden french fries and if there was salad it was wilted iceberg with a few cherry tomatoes. I think it’s fair to say that the public school lunch system is contributing in a very direct way to the rising incidence of obesity and obesity related conditions such as diabetes and heart disease we are witnessing in this country.
I think the White House and their ill-advised counsel are plain wrong on this one. No, I don’t think Obama’s children are off limits in this case. The ad is well done. Controversial, yes. Unfair or in poor taste? NO.
It’s a fair question. “President Obama’s daughters get healthy school lunches. Why don’t I?” So instead of wasting taxpayer’s money on some hired guns to do the dirty work for the White House why isn’t the White House doing something about school lunches? When Obama came to office he promised change… but sending your kids to an exclusive school with the rest of the Washington elite does not sound like change to me. Now if he sent his kids to public school and did something about the school lunches.. that’s change I CAN BELIEVE IN. I guess I’ll keep dreaming.

I’m so tired of my children being served leftovers especially pizza for breakfast on Wednesday mornings. For the 1st 2 days of school my children had NO breakfast served. WHY cannot it be “old school” as it was when I was in school, and the tray was handed to us was is is the one we got?
They Feel the need to let the children as young as Kindergarten fill their own trays. Are children that age resposible to make good food desisions? NO! Mine are not. Make them a tray.’
I do not think that elementary school children are capable of making good food choices. They eat what tastes good and what they like.
Just my opnion non the less. i just want the very best for my children. Not leftovers.

Your a fool, lets be honest here. You’ll likely delete this, but stop and think for a moment. Do you really think its possible for those two girls to attend public school in D.C.? I’d like to see that work considering the hatered and biggotry in our country towards the president, this does not even call in to question the SCORES of agents abroad that would love to have those little girls out in the open, as next to the President himself they are prime targets.
So they attend private school, and private school has a better lunch menu, that being said this is the reason it costs money. It is rediculous for us to not only expect him to place his daughters in harms way over lunches, but also to dictate to private companies how they run their business (Coincidentally I would be willing to bet that these are the same people saying he pries to much in to our business and hes a socialist).
And if your so concerned about your school how about this, get off your ass and volunteer to help at the school, donate time or money which ever you are comfortable with towards making that school better, your childern go there, you have just as much responsability as the State, and more than the president.
That being said, you are also likely the same people that hold “Tea Parties” and cry Tyrant when your taxes are raised for things like school lunch.
The issue goes beyond lunch, everyone wants it there way, but your all too lazy to get up and fix it, instead you point fingers and fix nothing.

I agree with Mark… It’s absurd to think that the children of the President would attend public school.
Another option that mark failed to point out however is that if you are so unsatisfied with your school’s lunches, why don’t you MAKE your own child’s lunch? To say it is the schools fault that obesity is a widespread issue is ignorant and just trying to pass the blame. It is the parents responsibility to instill healthy eating habits into their own children. The main cause of obesity in this country is LAZINESS. It is easier to eat McDonald’s and KFC than it is to cook a healthy meal. It is also easier to send your kids to school with money and then proceed to complain about the quality of the meals rather than just make your kid a sandwich and cut up some fruit.
Stop being lazy and fix your own problems.

No, I am not going to delete your post… I welcome opposing viewpoints.
And No I absolutely do not think it’s absurd that the President’s children go to public school. In fact I feel very strongly that every President should have their children attend public school! Otherwise all their talk of “change” is just a marketing gimmick.
All children are entitled to a healthy school lunch! Sorry but that’s where we are going to disagree… and it has nothing to do with being lazy (this is a ridiculous assertion)
