Obesity: In Your Genes?

by Megan on February 5, 2010

Being extremely overweight might not be entirely the fault of the individual; it may actually be their genes. Or rather, lack of genes. British scientists have discovered that severely obese people lack more or less the same 30 genes – which are found in people of normal weight.

The study, conducted by scientists at the Imperial College London, focused on participants who all had a BMI of more than 40 and were at a high risk of health problems because of their weight. Although only 19 cases of the “deleted” genes were found in a group of 16 000 obese and normal weight people, scientists say they believe genetics play a major role in influencing weight gain. None of the people who had a normal weight had the missing genes.

A researcher at the college, Dr Robin Walters, says that not all morbidly obese individuals will have the exact same genetic code missing, but there are more than likely to be variations of the gene deletion.

“If we can identify these individuals through genetic testing, we can then offer them appropriate support and medical interventions, such as the option of weight loss surgery, to improve their long-term health,” another research scientist, Professor Philippe Froguel, told the BBC.
