Oprah Supports Fast Food

In May, Oprah Winfrey announced on her show that her website was going to offer a downloadable coupon for two pieces of grilled chicken, two sides and a biscuit from KFC. After all of the shows where she has guest nutritionists, doctors, trainers and chefs all educating her audience on leading a healthy lifestyle it’s a shame that she decided to promote a greasy fast food chain like KFC.
Of course one would say she’s promoting the ‘healthy’ meal because it’s grilled chicken and not deep fried, but one must also consider the calories in the two sides and two biscuits. Apart from the calories, think of the likelihood that those who downloaded the coupons, for example housewives, probably ran to KFC, got the ‘healthy’ meal but then the husband and kids probably got a bucket of deep fried chicken.
Something else to think about is the fact that Oprah is on the heavy side these days, so should she be eating biscuits? Here’s the breakdown of calories for the free meal in the above photo:
-Grilled Chicken: 260
-Cole Slaw: 190
-Mashed Potatoes and Gray: 130
-Biscuit: 190
GRAND TOTAL: 770 Calories
As for those downloadable coupons, one store in NYC actually ran out of chicken. A spokesperson for KFC said that the combination of a sagging economy and Oprah’s sacred word created a ‘perfect storm’ for the chicken run.
Why doesn’t Oprah offer coupons on her site for a vitamin company, or for the Whole Foods Market chain? If she’s going to pass out freebies on the internet it would be nice if it were for the better good of her audience’s health and not to further ignite the obesity problems in the USA.
