Richard Simmons Campaigns For Kids Fitness

Fitness icon Richard Simmons was a surprise guest on the CNN show Anderson Cooper 360° to talk about his efforts to get kids in shape. He explained that over the past three years he has been campaigning to get PE classes and recess back on the school schedules.
“For three years I’ve been trying to get PE back into the school system. In Americas there is 25 million obese children…I’m at City Hall tomorrow, here in New York for a big pep rally to get people going and I hope I’m going to have a meeting with President Obama and Michelle [Obama] and make out a plan. I hope.”
Anderson joked with Simmons about his infamous exercise outfit that consists of a red sparkly tank and itsy-bitsy shorts. Simmons admitted he’s a ‘clown and a court jester’ but he’s been doing this for 35 years and that’s just how he is.
“…35 years, but now I’m really worried about our kids. And all day long I get emails from parents who are very concerned about their obese kids, they’re not moving. The school has taken PE and recess out…and we have to get that back in.”
This year alone, Simmons has visited 26 schools and taught classes to kids.
“The kid who learns is the kid who moves….We have to do this for our kids or they will become overweight teenagers and then they will become overweight adults and then what’s going to happen to our health care system?”
Good luck to Richard Simmons and may he get his meeting with the President and the First Lady.
