Robert Downey Jr.’s Weight Gain of 20 Lbs for Iron Man II

by Betsy on Celebs on May 7, 2010

Robert Downey Jr. stars as the business man turned superhero in the hit film, Iron Man II. In a recent interview with his trainer Brad Bose, Brad explained that for the second movie installment they took on a different form of training than the first Iron Man film. He said,

“When we did Iron Man 1, we had five months before the shoot to get ready, so we used more traditional, heavy-weight training.”

However, between the filming of the two movies Robert had worked on the Sherlock Holmes film and lost a considerable amount of weight and was down to 151 pounds. To pack on the pounds Brad put Robert on a Rocky IV type of training using equipment like wheelbarrows, sledgehammers, truck tires and bamboo bars. He explained,

“Instead of doing regular bench presses, we used a bamboo bar… and we would hang plates on rubber bands off the bar… so it was like trying to bench press a snake!” Bose explains. “It bounced all over the place.”

The two worked together three times a week for approximately 90 minutes each time and Downey Jr. also trained in kung fu two to three days a week.

Robert appears to be in great shape. Doing a 'Rocky' workout obviously works!
