Serena Williams: On The Line

With 22 Grand Slam titles under her belt one would think that Serena Williams has it all.  But when her older sister was murdered in 2003 her life understandably changed.  Now, she has written a memoir titled On the Line where she opens up about life, body image and the love she has for her family.  Here are some interesting words on body image and diet when she interviewed with People Magazine. When asked why she wrote the memoir she said,

“I wanted to explain how I see things. I wanted to talk about my body and my sisters, my career, what I’ve learned, what I’m still learning. I want women to know that it’s okay. You can be whatever size you are, and you can be beautiful both inside and out. We’re always told what’s beautiful and what’s not, and that’s not right.”

After her sister died, Serena gained 20 pounds and she commented how odd it is that everyone was obsessed about her weight.  She sees it as ‘no big deal’ and that some days your big and some days your small.  But she does admit to having insecurities,

“Sometimes I look at myself in the mirror and am like, ‘I want to lose my inner thigh. I’ve got to do an hour of cardio today,’ or whatever. I try not to do it, but the insecurity comes back sometimes. I do want to look good still; I do want to be healthy.”

She went into more detail and said she thinks her thighs are too big and her arms are too muscular.  Serena even mentioned that she thinks Michelle Obama has great arms and she wishes hers were the same. As for the tennis champ’s workout apart from tennis training she’ll go to the gym, do a lot of sprints and likes to be physical and active in life.
Lastly, Serena said she doesn’t believe in diets but she chooses to eat the right portions and not deprive herself of foods she likes.

“I eat what I like, but I try to eat it in proportion. There are things that aren’t healthy for me, so I try to eat less of them.”

Serena’s book On the Line is in stores now.
