Are Skinny Thighs Unhealthy?

Being able to fit into your skinny jeans may not be a feat you’d want to celebrate anymore. Recent research shows that thin thighs could put you at a higher risk of developing heart disease and could even lead to premature death.
Danish researchers studied 2 800 test subjects for up to 12 years and discovered that those who had the skinniest thighs (between 18 and 23 inches in circumference) had almost double the risk of heart disease when compared to those with larger thighs. According to Greg Benson, president of the International Sports and Fitness Trainers Association, a woman with a 23-inch thigh would typically be a size 6 or 8.
Dr Berit Heitmann, a director of research at Copenhagen University Hospital in Denmark, reasons that people with small limbs didn’t have the necessary muscle and body mass to ensure appropriate glucose and lipid metabolism.
Heitman’s study, which was published in the online version of the British Medical Journal, recorded similar results for both men and women. But she warns that her research should not be used as an excuse to quit the gym or your healthy lifestyle.

It’s difficult for me to comment on this article as I have not examined the article myself. This finding may be corroborating the lower heart risks seen with pear shaped body types vs higher risks seen with apple shaped body types. It would seem that skinner thighs would be associated with an apple shaped body while larger thighs would be associated more with a pear shape body.
