Guys across the US have been all year for this – the latest edition of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Edition. In its 47th year of publication, the special issue doesn’t rely on the stick-thin models on Europe’s runways and instead focuses on healthy, curving and strong-looking women, like Christen Teigen. The 24-year-old model and girlfriend of John Legend shared some of her tips to get SI fit.
Christen purposefully avoids runway jobs and prefers to stick to lingerie and swimsuit catalogs so she’s not pressured to look unhealthily skinny and is allowed to retain her curves.
“Most people think models don’t eat, but I am just obsessed with food, so I have to work a little bit harder to get in shape. I’m a big salt eater, which is bad because eating too much of it leaves you looking and feeling bloated. If I eat too many salty foods at night, I look bloated the next morning.”
To prevent this Christen minimizes her sodium intake at night and follows a two-day rule – if she has a shoot on Friday she’ll go easy on her diet on Wednesday, watch what she eats on Thursday and is then camera-ready by Friday.
Foods the SI model usually eats include scallops and sushi as well as turkey bacon and turkey burgers. Although she’s not a big fan of brown rice, Christen gets her fiber from pasta and potatoes. Christen says she gives in to her cravings easily (she is only human after all), but only in small portions and then trains hard in the gym three to four times a week to compensate for the slip-up. Because she hates cardio, she usually focuses on circuit training working squats, lunges and using a medicine ball.

Americans already eat too much salt because of our high intake of processed foods. Salt may lead to bloating and has been associated with hypertension. African Americans are particularly salt sensitive when it comes to developing hypertension.
The American Heart Association recommends less than 1500 mg of salt per day or a little more than half a teaspoon of salt per day, which is more than most people take in by lunch time! Average intake of salt for Americans is about 3400 mg per day.
Tips to Reduce Salt Intake.
1. Read Labels
2. Reduce processed food intake (fast food, chips) which is responsible for 77% of an American’s daily intake of salt.
3. Cook and eat more meals at home.
4. Use spices instead of salt. Spices really wake up food flavor. Think chili, cumin, cinnamon.
