Strongest Man Never Ate Meat

by Megan on January 21, 2010

Those who follow strongman competitions and keep an eye on records involving great feats of strength will know the Mighty Joe Rollino. Sadly, at the age of 104, he died. But not from old age, he was hit by a minivan while on one of his daily walks.

Even at his ripe old age, Joe never missed his morning walk. Whether the sun was shining or the rain came pouring down, the man affectionately known as the World’s Strongest Man by his fans in Brooklyn, walked 5 miles every day.

Joe once swam the Atlantic on a 6-degree day, and even recovered the bodies of 2 people who drowned in Prospect Park when the police wouldn’t dare brave the icy waters. Whether his resilience and stamina was a result of his daily exercise and diet only he will know. Joe didn’t eat meat and never smoked. He didn’t even drink any alcohol!

Joe could bend quarters with nothing but his teeth and his thumb, had once lifted 475 pounds with those same teeth, 635 pounds with one finger and 3 200 pounds with his back. One of his last feats of strengths was even as recent as last year, when at the age of 103 he put a quarter between his teeth, and bent it.

Celeb Diet Doc
To many Americans adding muscle means eating a lot of animal protein. Joe, arguable the strongest man pound for pound, shows that the meat=strength belief is a fallacy. Hey remember that gorillas, the king of the jungle, eat primarily a vegan style diet and they make Arnold Schwarzenegger look absolutely puny.
