Anna Friel on Hollywood and Body Image

Anna Friel, the curvacious actress who stars as Charlotte, aka Chuck on Pushing Daisies is a native of England.  And even though she looks drop dead gorgeous she admits that since she has lived and worked in the US, especially in Hollywood, she has had to deal with the constant pressures she feels about the need to be rail thin.  Fortunately, she hasn’t succumbed to the pressure and she strives to maintain a healthy weight and also a healthy self image. According to the Daily Mail the actress said,
“There is pressure in Hollywood, no doubt about it. You have to watch your weight if you are an actress in this town. I’ve become much more health-conscious since being in America,”  she continues, “But I don’t want to lose any weight as I like having boobs and I’d lose them. I feel quite proud I’ve got curves. I wouldn’t like to be totally scrawny.”
Anna currently lives in Los Angeles and her newest project is a role in the film London Boulevard, a drama that also stars her husband David Thewlis, Keira Knightley and Colin Farrell.

The Ideal Celeb Body: UK Survey

the-ideal-celeb-body

The British have voted on which celebrities’ body parts would create what they deemed the perfect body. The survey, which was conducted across the United Kingdom sampling answers by men and women, was carried out by weight loss company Proactol and polled pretty surprising results.

Unfortunately the original results could not be found on the Proactol website and The Sun newspaper is the only media that printed it, so the credibility of the survey is questionable. But the results do make for entertaining reading…

Obama’s Surgeon General Regina Benjamin Overweight Controversy

regina-benjamin

Dr. Regina Benjamin, President Obama’s nominee for surgeon general, is receiving quite a bit of bad publicity because of her weight. The curvy 52-year-old, who has been nominated to be the public face of the United States’ healthcare program, has been slammed by bloggers after pictures of her (and her chubby cheeks) circulated across the Internet.

Benjamin, however, is not short of supporters. Bloggers and organizations (like the National Association to Advance Fat Acceptance) alike have rallied to her defence. A blogger on Frisky.com said:

“The job of surgeon general is to make health care and policy decisions for the country – not to look hot in a pair of skinny jeans. Perhaps her size could actually be an advantage – she’s in a better position to understand obesity and contemplate out-of-the-box ways to roll back ever-expanding American waistlines.”

Mischa Barton’s Body Image Issues

Mischa Barton is currently being hospitalized at a psychiatric ward and no one seems to know why or how but there is something definitely going on because she even missed walking the red carpet last week for the premiere of her new movie, Homecoming.
It’s no secret that Mischa has struggled with fluctuating weight and now that her current condition is being scrutinized by all the news agency some sources have come forth to imply that Mischa is still struggling with body image issues.
“She has big self-esteem issues. … She hates her legs,” says a source close to Barton. “She isn’t comfortable with her body. It’s been a big source of stress and self-hate.”
Her insecurities were also fueled by the mean comments made by tabloids and bloggers.
“She had a big problem with those photos of her cellulite. … She didn’t like it,” says another source. “That just was something that contributed to her spiraling but she didn’t do much to fix it because of her partying.”
Another friend said,
“[She was] more pissed off than hurt and she complained a lot about that” – she didn’t let them get “to her too much. … I never saw her diet.”
But when photos showed a thinner Barton, she took to her blog and spoke out about the “crazy press,” telling fans that she’s “happier and healthier than ever so there’s no need to worry about me.”
Then when she lost heaps of weight people claimed she was too thin, so she spoke out about that on her own website.  She wrote,
“Just be happy and secure with yourself,” she wrote on her Web site. “Don’t let other people’s perceptions of you dictate the way you live your life.”
Regardless of the rumors and gossip, as of now no one knows the real reason she has been admitted into the ward.  But what’s more important is that she’s getting treatment.

The Photoshop Effect: 1 Year Later

Can you believe it’s been a year since Diet.com released their popular online video, The Photoshop Effect? What’s even more surprising is that nothing’s changed since then. But are we really all that surprised?

The controversial yet educational video, which has since received almost three million views, investigates just how far some digital retouchers go to literally shave 10 years off the faces and bodies of celebrities.

“Every [celebrity] picture that gets put through, like a Meg Ryan or Nicole Kidman, they have people on staff or a freelancer and they pay them very well to retouch every image that is released of them,” says Tim Lynch, photographer/retoucher, in the video. “That’s the reality of it. They don’t want to release anything that isn’t retouched.”

Raven Symone Criticized For Weight

Raven Symone, the bubbly actress from She’s So Raven and The Cosby Show has been a hefty girl for years.  She’s always been one to impress her weight instead of going on fad diets and yo-yoing on the scales.  Recently, her co-host Debbie Allen was interviewed by US Weekly to promote her new film Fame.  However, when Allen explained that her younger fans know her because of her work with Symone, she referred to Symone as a ‘heifer.’
“I was wondering how they knew me and then they say, ‘Do you know Raven?’ I’m like, ‘Of course, I know that little heifer! I love that girl.’”
Granted, it’s possible that Allen meant it as a term of endearment, especially since she went on to say she loved her, but the tabloids have misconstrued it and claiming that Allen was criticizing the 23-year-old actress.  This isn’t the first time Symone has been targeted but she always takes it in stride.  She said,
“I’m healthy, I exercise, I believe in myself, and I think I’m beautiful.  You just have to learn how to transform the pressures into something that doesn’t soak into you on a personal level. You see it, you breathe past it, you don’t let it sink into your self-esteem.”

Katherine Heigel on Body Image and Hollywood

Gerard Butler and Katherine Heigel or on the July/August issue of Fitness First Magazine promoting their summertime romantic comedy, The Ugly Truth.  The cover story was primarily about Gerard Butler but we did get a bit of insight into Katherine’s views on body image and the influences of Hollywood.  She said,
“I don’t have a lot of discipline.  If I wasn’t in this industry I wouldn’t workout.  But I have hips and a butt and everything that goes along with that, including cellulite, so I do the best I can. When people say, ‘You have a real body’ to me, I’m like, ‘Is that a backhanded compliment?’”
As for other celebrities, here’s what she had to say:
“Kate Winslet has a fantastic body, period.  it’s far more my taste than, say, Nicole Richie’s.  You don’t have to look like that to be fashionable or hot.  I don’t condone obesity but I don’t think we all need to to be a f**king size two.  It’s a ridiculous goal.”
Katherine also gave a few words of advice:
“You know what’s important?  Living well and not being consumed with eating boring salads that you hate; eat brie, and have a glass of red wine!  Everybody has different body types, and I’m sick of this thing where we should all be little clones of one another.”
Since Katherine said that she too has cellulite she naturally said she wasn’t into doing nudity scenes in a movie:
“I think nudity [in productions] is distracting – the audience isn’t paying attention to your acting; they’re looking at your boobs.  I don’t want the whole world seeing me completely naked.  I’m flawed, I’m not perfect.  But clothes help; a good bra with some underwire definitely helps a lot!”

hayden-panettiere-on-hollywood-diet-pressures

Hayden Panettiere one of the stars of Heroes and an activist for various organizations recently spoke with the online magazine, A Girl’s World.  Hayden is only 19 years old but she has become a role model for girls everywhere as she stays out of the tabloids, has a great acting career and continues to inspire others through her charity work.  During the interview she was asked how she handles the Hollywood pressure of having to look ‘perfect’:

“I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thanked God and my parents for raising me in a place that was so humbling and so outside any of that stuff. I mean I live criticism every day. I’d go walk my dogs and I used to walk them in my PJ’s and now I have to make sure I look half decent or else I’ll get trashed. Or like having cellulite on the back of your legs. ‘I’m sorry, I’m a woman. I don’t know what you want me to tell you’ [we laugh]. ‘I’m sorry. It’s not going to go away. I can’t do anything about it. I apologize if I offended you’.”
