Donna Simpson weighs 603 pounds. But she says she’s still too skinny, and needs to weigh nearly 1 000 pounds before she can be recognized in the Guinness World Book of Records as the world’s fattest woman – a goal she’s set her sights on.

The 42-year-old mother of two is determined to double her size to reach her goal by eating mounds of junk food and moving as little as possible, even though she can only move 20 feet before needing to rest currently.

“I’d love to be 1,000lb,” Donna says. “It might be hard though. Running after my daughter keeps my weight down.”

The New Jersey resident isn’t alone in her quest to supersize herself; her long-term partner, 49-year-old Phillipe (who she met on an online dating site for obese individuals), encourages her every step of the way and is a self-confessed fat admirer. He only weighs 150 pounds though. Donna’s other motivators are the men who pay to watch her eat fast food on her website. And with a weekly shopping bill of $750, Donna needs all the extra income she can get. To reach her goal, Donna needs to consume up to 12 000 calories a day – the healthy average for a woman is 2 000.

Donna started to pack on the pounds at a young age as her mother always cooked big meals for the family. During her teens years, however, she became a little worried about her weight and started taking diet pills, but soon gave up because she was unhappy all the time. Thus continued began Donna’s spiral down the slopes of fatty fast foods and a ballooning body.

Surprisingly, Donna’s proud of her weight and her goal to become the world’s fattest woman.

“I love eating and people love watching me eat,” she says. “It makes people happy, and I’m not harming anyone.”

Kirstie Alley may be forever struggling with her weight but she’s definitely making a business out of it and making plenty of money. It all started a few years ago when she lost weight on Jenny Craig. Even though she gained the weight back she still received a huge payment for endorsing the product. Then she gets her own reality show, Kirstie Alley’s Big Life, which will chronicle her current weight loss journey and of course she will get a paycheck for that. And now we discover that she’s launching her own weight loss company that will cater to the ‘average overweight American.’ Even more money!  She said that with her magic ‘elixir’ she has already dropped 20 pounds in the past eight weeks. She said,

“Im not a doctor or a nutritionist – I’m a regular person like you who has been struggling with her weight and searching and praying for a weight loss program to end that forever.”

The name of her new company, Organic Liason, will develop a series of slimming products. One of the products is Rescue Me and it takes on excess hunger and cravings. She explained,

“It will support your body and flood your body with the missing elements that make weight loss an uphill battle.”

She will have to lose a considerable amount of weight to get people to believe in her product. It’s easy for Kim Kardashian to sell QuickTrim because she’s got a great body, but who wants to look like Kirstie Alley? We’ll have to wait and see.

Khloe Kardashian lost 25 pounds before marrying Lamar Odom. Now, she’s working harder than ever to maintain her new shape and be proud of her healthy body. She said that on television when she stands next to her sisters (Kim and Kourtney) everyone thinks she’s exceptionally tall, but actually she’s five-foot-ten and it’s her sisters who are exceptionally short. But putting heigth aside she’s not aiming to be stick thin. She said,

“I don’t like being skinny. It’s not really a numbers things for me.”

Can you imagine being kicked off an online dating and social networking website for being too fat? Well, thousands of Americans, Canadians and Brits can. BeautifulPeople.com got rid of 5 000 of its members because they had picked up weight over the holiday season.

But it wasn’t the website’s management that had done the axing, it was the members themselves. Apparently BeautifulPeople.com only allows new members if existing ones think they are attractive enough – so new members are vetted by current members and their highly subjective ideals of what is beautiful.

After the estimated 5 000 now excluded members posted holiday pictures of themselves, in which it appeared that they had gained weight, their fellow members who police the site felt it necessary to “maintain” the site’s “high standards”.

“As a business, we mourn the loss of any member, but the fact remains that our members demand the high standard of beauty be upheld,” Robert Hintze, the website’s founder told the BBC. “Letting fatties roam the site is a direct threat to our business model and the very concept for which BeautifulPeople.com was founded.”

Obesity among children is growing at an alarming rate in the US and other parts of the developed world.  Fast foods and processed foods are staples in the diets of kids these days and now Paula Deen, the cook known for making fattening comfort food, is doing her part to ensure kids continue packing on the pounds.  Last week she was on The View to promote her new cookbook called Lunch-Box Set, a cookbook for kids.  However, the promotion didn’t go so well when co-host Barbara Walters was practically scolding the chubby chef because all of the foods in the cookbook are fattening. Walters said,

“You tell kids to have cheesecake for breakfast. You tell them to have chocolate cake and meatloaf for lunch. And french fries. Doesn’t it bother you that you’re adding to this?”

Deen played the moderation card and said that kids wouldn’t eat those foods everyday but Walters didn’t back down and said the cookbook wasn’t a lesson in moderation.

It’s surprising that Walters lashed out at a guest but it’s good to see someone question absurd ideas such as cheesecake for breakfast.  Deen still got her publicity, but maybe she’ll think twice when she writes her next cookbook and take a lesson in nutrition.

Incredibly a doctor was fired from his post at the Bay County Health Department in Florida for posting catchy slogans on an electronic sign reminding folks to think about what they eat. Some of his classics include:

Well that’s where the good doc, Jason Newsom, got fired! You see a county commissioner and two lawyers owned Dunkin Donut shops in Panama City, Florida – and lawyers do what they do best and that is to threatened a law suit. Even folks within his own department (mind you this is a supposed “health department”) rallied against him when he banned donuts from staff meetings.

Well the doc got the ax and he is now reapplying for his old job. I would be amazed if he got it back, frankly. Just goes to show you how financial interests will trump health interests even at the “health department.”

oh and I would add…  America gets Fat on Dunkin.

Anthony Bourdain, the rebel chef and author of Kitchen Confidential, outs Rachael Ray for her endorsement of Dunkin Donuts in next month’s Outside Magazine.

“She’s got a magazine, a TV empire, all these best-selling books – I’m guessing she’s not hurting for money. She’s hugely influential, particularly with children. And she’s endorsing Dunkin’ Donuts. It’s like endorsing crack for kids.”

Bourdain adds: “I’m not a very ethical guy. I don’t have a lot of principles. But somehow that seems to me over the line. Juvenile diabetes has exploded. Half of Americans don’t have necks. And she’s up there saying, ‘Eat some [bleeping] Dunkin’ Donuts. You look great in that swimsuit – eat another doughnut!’ That’s evil.”

A representative for Ray had this to say, “Anyone who knows Rachael and watches her on TV is aware she promotes balance and moderation, instead of living life in extremes. Her work addressing kids’ and families’ nutritional needs speaks for itself so we respectfully disagree with Anthony’s opinion.”

Rachael Ray has officially entered the Celebrity Diet Doctor “Hall of Shame.” Anthony is right on this one. She has become hugely influential and a role model for millions. Selling out to a corporation whose junk food is contributing to the rising obesity and diabetes rates in this country is unconscionable.

There is this false assumption that “anything in moderation is ok.” Smoking is not acceptable even in moderation. Similarly eating dunkin donuts which are full of refined carbs should not be an example of “balance and moderation.”

During an exciting episode 5 of the Biggest Loser Season 4, I couldn’t help but notice the product placements. Exhibit one is for Nabisco 100 calorie snacks that were peddled by trainer Bob. Sorry Bob, but these snacks are junk food and will cause weight gain, despite the smaller serving sizes. These new smaller portion sizes are a convenient way for food manufacturers to jump on the “weight loss” bandwagon and pay lip service to improving people’s health. But junk food in smaller portion sizes is still junk food.

Let’s take a closer look at the ingredient list for the new “100 calorie snack” size Chips Ahoy. Notice all the refined carbs. The first ingredient is enriched flour. The words wheat flour may make you think it’s healthy. Think again. Enriched flour is stripped of the fiber-containing bran (which also contains most of a grain’s antioxidants). Look for the word “whole” before the grain if you want a product high in whole grains and fiber. More refined carbs come in the form of “empty calorie” sugar.

The problem with highly refined, highly processed food is that they are very calorie dense. Since we eat about the same weight of food a day, by the time you satisfy your hunger with high-calorie dense foods you’ll be packing a lot of calories. These foods will not fill you up or curb your hunger. Quite the opposite. The refined carbs will create cravings, by causing your blood sugar levels to skyrocket and then crash, while the high calorie density will leave you wanting to eat more. The food manufacturers know that you won’t stop at 100 calories. Don’t be fooled. Clever marketing and nothing more. Skip all the “100 calorie packs” and eat an apple instead.
