Gwyneth Paltrow recently revealed that her physician has diagnosed her with a condition called osteopenia, a precursor to the much more serious disease osteoporosis. The 37 year old actress reportedly has the bones of an 80 year old woman.

I suffered a pretty severe tibial plateau fracture a few years ago (requiring surgery) which led the orthopedic surgeon to give me a bone scan, at which point it was discovered I had the beginning stages of osteopenia,” she reveals.

Paltrow has been an 11 year follower of a diet popular with celebrities called the macrobiotic diet, which calls for lots of vegetables, whole grains and fruit with small quantities of fish, but discourages dairy and red meat. Among other things discouraged by this diet alcohol, chocolate, hot spices, sugar and coffee.

Miss Paltrow also said that when her doctors ran some tests her vitamin D levels came back as the lowest they had ever seen. This is definitely not good news for anyone to hear. Nutritionist Sharon Natoli from Sydney, Australia says that a macrobiotic diet usually contains less protein than diets that include dairy and meat.

so if she’s doing a lot of exercise but not getting enough protein, she’s not getting enough to build her bones either,” says Sharon. “Plus, vitamin D helps calcium absorption so if you’re not getting enough calcium but getting enough vitamin D and vice-versa. . . you really need the two to be working together.”

Ms Natoli says that any celebrity fad diets are not recommended, especially those that leave out entire food groups. She says that any time a food group is left out, something else is missing as well that your body needs.

Celeb Diet Doc…
Osteoporosis is a widespread problem in western culture and there are a number of culprits including processed foods, excessive animal protein intake, alcohol, hormonal changes, gluten sensitivity, cola drinks, and dairy to name a few. Despite all the recommendations to take supplemental calcium be aware that the US already has some of the highest rates of calcium intake in the world, as well as one of the highest fracture rates in the world! This may because of our high dairy intake which despite increasing our calcium intake also causes excessive calcium to be lost.

Here’s what you can do to prevent osteporosis.

1. Exercise
2. Limit processed foods and alcohol, sodas
3. Take supplemental Vit D
4. Limit dairy
5. Limit animal protein
6. Increase plant based foods
7. Consider Bio-identical HRT (this is controversial and you will need to consult with your physician to see what is right for you).

Christina Applegate has been breast cancer-free for a year. We’re seeing more of her on the red carpet as of late and she’s been talking of movie making once again. Most recently while at the Feed American charity event she revealed that she and the powers-that-be are in the beginning talks of an Anchorman 2. She also mentioned at the event that she follows a strict macrobiotic diet and when asked what guests could expect if they were to go to her house for dinner she simply responded that her fridge only has macrobiotic food. So what you see is what you get. She explains,

“I have a chef that cooks me all my macrobiotic food. But every once and a while, it’s ok to live your live.”

So what is Applegate referring to when she wants to indulge? It’s pizza with plenty of cheese. She prefers New York or Chicago style pizza so when she really gets the craving she’ll have pizza flown from Lou Malnati’s in Chicago. She warned,

“Don’t tell my macrobiotic lady about that.”

Other stars who follow a macrobiotic diet include Madonna, Gwyneth Paltrow and Kim Kardashian.

Celeb Diet Doc
The macrobiotic diet has Japanese origins and consists primarily of whole grains (brown rice), veggies, soup (miso), beans and legumes along with some seafood.

Reality television star Kim Kardashian sure is on a health kick as of late. Over the past couple of months she has been all over the tabloids exercising, making fitness workout DVDs and exercising yet some more. Now, she’s told Us Weekly Magazine that she followed a macrobiotic diet and had a strict workout routine in preparation for filming her three-part fitness DVD series titled, Fit in Your Jeans by Friday. (see image above)

Kim is following a macrobiotic diet which includes foods such as tofu, quinoa, soy cheese and veggie burgers and she’s staying away from burgers and fries. Her workout regimen involved working out every day for at least two hours and some days she would even do an extra workout. Her cardio portions of her workout consisted of using small weights, she did heaps of lunges, and also a lot of abs exercises.

Celeb Diet Doc..
Good to see that Kim is starting to a healthier diet! Her junk food diet was going to doom her to weight gain and poor health.
