Former Spice Girl Mel-B had one amazing year in 2009 and things are still on the up-and-up for 2010. Last year she released an exercise DVD, had a great gig doing a burlesque Peepshow in Las Vegas and got a job hosting Dance Your Ass Off. Being that she’s in tip-top shape it was no surprise she was selected to be the poster child for the 2010 International Fitness Week which occurs during the first week of February. She’s currently on a whirlwind tour visiting various countries in Europe to promote health and fitness as she endorses Fitness First, a global health and fitness center. Mel-B said,

“International Fitness Week is a great idea and I want to encourage everybody in the world to become totally fit. We want International Fitness Week to make people realise how good they can feel by exercising regularly.”

During International Fitness Week over 400 gyms across 15 countries will be opening their doors for free to encourage people to exercise. Trainers will be on hand to answer questions and give workout tips.

Marissa Jaret Winokur has lost her gig with Dance Your Ass Off to the sexy former Spice Girl, Mel-B. The executive producer of the show said that they switched to Mel-B because the Oxygen channel’s core audience grew up with the Spice Girls and there’s a large portion of the audience that can’t connect to Winokur. But Winokur’s representative told People magazine a different story:

“Marissa’s reasons for not returning to season 2 are the following: the format of the program did not allow her to interact with the contestants and offer them encouragement and support, and criticism she received from producers regarding her appearance.”

The Tony award winning actress has been struggling with her weight for a couple of years, and it looks like Marissa was axed from the show due to her weight. As for Mel-B she is very excited about taking on the show as she knows what it’s like to dance and lose weight and she’s looking forward to following the contestants’ journeys.

Former Spice Girl, Mel B is currently working on the Las Vegas Stage Review, Peepshow. Needless to say, there are some barely-there outfits required for the stage from the looks of the photo above, but lucky for us she revealed to People Magazine how she’s staying in shape for the show. First off, she said that she relies on the food delivery service Freshology to get her daily dose of protein such as fish and chicken. The 33-year-old told People Magazine,

“I have to eat, and I’m addicted to quinoa.” But once a week, “I splurge on whatever I’m craving—either an In-and-Out cheeseburger or a traditional English Sunday roast.”

She has obviously been working out for years, but she did confess that those rock-hard abs of hers don’t come easily.

“I do half an hour of cardio and 200 sit-ups three times a day,” says the 5′5″ former Spice Girl, who now wears size 28 jeans. “I’ve always been obsessed with doing abs. I change positions every 10 reps. I like how quickly—if you stick to it—you can see results.”

Unfortunately, just this week Mel B announced she is ending her work on Peepshow.

Celeb Diet Doctor…
I highly recommend quinoa. High in protein and low glycemic this was the mother grain of the Incas. Substitute quinoa in your favorite rice dishes; you’ll love it. Just add 2 parts water to one part quinoa and cook till you can separate and fluff with a fork (about 20 minutes).

I recently profiled Mel B, aka Scary Spice who is now strutting her stuff on Dancing with the Stars, for saying that she didn’t diet or count calories. However, it’s clear that her diet of fruits, veggies, lean meats and whole grains, is healthy and frankly looks like a typical “diet” to me. For someone who says she doesn’t “diet,” she does report using a dieting trick. Her secret is the cold water diet.

Mel B says she burns more calories by drinking cold water with all her meals because the body uses energy to heat up the water during digestion. So does it work? Theoretically yes, practically not very much. Yes it’s true that you’ll burn 4 % more calories drinking ice cold water over the course of an hour, and at 3 glasses of ice cold classes of water per day, you could theoretically lose 2-3 pounds after a year. Drinking room temperature water will not increase your metabolism, so there is a small theoretical benefit to cold water. I say small because you’re better off concentrating on your diet than drinking cold water.

I am always taken aback by all the “spin.” First it’s I don’t diet, but here I use this diet trick. Well, Mel B may actually believe this but it sends the wrong message to those trying to lose weight. The magazines are always trying to “spin” a new angle on a diet. Unfortunately, potential dieters may get the wrong impression and jump on the latest quick fix only to be disappointed. A good healthy diet is still the key to successful weight loss, by far…Â Â And I do recommend drinking water, just don’t expect miracles.

Since the birth of her second child Angel, in April of this year, Mel B or better known as scary spice has since lost 40 lbs of her baby weight. And she claims she did it without dieting. Instead she got to work with a trainer less than a week after giving birth. And lately she has been burning up the dance floor on Dancing in with the Stars, putting in 6 hour training days for the past 6 weeks. Mel B says

“I don’t believe in diets, I believe in listening to your body and being consistent. If you want a burger, have one, but balance it out the next day by eating salmon and vegetables.”

Mel B’s “I don’t diet” Diet
Mel says she doesn’t believe in diets or counting calories. She has 3 meals and 2 snacks per day consisting mostly of fruits, veggies and lean meats like turkey and fish along with whole grains like brown rice and whole wheat pasta.

Celeb Diet Doctor Weigh In…
News flash. Mel B does diet. While you can lose weight with exercise alone, many studies show that weight loss stemming from exercise alone is quite modest (a couple of pounds) compared with diet and exercise. The role of exercise and diet in weight loss are different. Generally speaking you lose weight through diet and you keep it off with exercise, as exercise is one of the strongest predictors of lasting weight loss.

Mel B is on a “diet.” It’s big on fruits and veggies which is one of the best ways to fuel weight loss. Add to this some lean protein to curb hunger and she’s got the makings of a sensible diet that will lead to consistent weight loss. So don’t be fooled by stars that say they don’t diet, they do.
