PETA has one great marketing team; they’ve clothed Cloris Leachman in a dress made of cabbage leaves and de-clothed Alicia Silverstone for a controversial nude PETA ad. However, their latest ad campaign on a Jackonsville Florida billboard doesn’t involve any celebrities but it has meat-lovers in a frenzy. The ad implies that obese women are like whales and if they go vegetarian they will be thin. The text reads as: Save the Whales. Lose the Blubber: Go Vegetarian.

Scott Johnson, a local reporter with WJXT interviewed the PETA representative Ashley Byrne and she claims that the ad is a humorous way to grab people’s attention. She said,

“People are bombarded with ads for foods that make them fat and unhealthy. PETA’s ad campaign is empowering for consumers because it highlights that a vegetarian diet is the best way to battle the bulge.”

Celeb Diet Doc
The PETA folks are off base here. What’s making people fat are vegan and vegetarian refined carbs such as sugar, cakes, cookies, bread, crackers, soda etc.

Obesity is caused by consuming too many processed foods, NOT by meat consumption. It is the very reason Atkins has been successful because it eliminates the greatest source of refined calories in the Western diet and that is refined carbs. So if you consume a vegetarian or vegan diet that is primarily refined carbs you’re consuming a junk food diet and you’ll likely be overweight.

The correct answer is to consume more unrefined fruits and veggies. This is the key to weight loss, better health and saving the “whales.” And by the way that’s where Atkins gets it wrong too, because he considered a carb a carb and limited fruit consumption in his diet, mistakenly believing that fruit causes weight gain. Pure rubbish. Whole unrefined fruits will lead to weight loss and better health.

Emmy and Golden Globe Award nominee Alicia Silverstone proclaimed her vegan/vegatarian status back in 2007 when she modeled for a risque PETA ad that was actually pulled from the Comcast line-up of commercials. Over the past two years we haven’t seen much of her on the silver screen but she is currently writing a book titled, The Kind Diet: A Simple Guide to Feeling Great, Losing Weight, and Saving the Planet. When she first started writing the book she said in USA Today that the book,

“explores the connection between what we put in our bodies and what we’re doing to the planet, and how choosing the right foods in the kitchen can help you feeling lighter, sexier, and more alive.”

She is hoping to spread the word about certain healing foods to boost one’s health and to live better. The book is part informative and part cookbook as she gives some of her own recipes for healthy eating. For example, she writes a lot about the benefits of seaweed, which is rich in calcium and B vitamins and she said,

“It makes your skin look amazing and your hair really strong. One of the recipes in my book is leftover nori (a type of seaweed) wraps. Anything in the fridge I want to use up, I shove into nori. It’s delicious.”

The Kind Diet will be released in the fall of 2009.

The long time vegetarian Cloris Leachman poses for PETA for the new campaign being launched called, Let Vegetarianism Grow On You. In the photo above she’s wearing a dress made entirely of real lettuce. The actress has been in the business for 60 years and most recently we’ve seen her dance into the hearts of America on Dancing with the Stars. She accredits her good health and ability to keep up with the younger cast on the show to being a vegetarian. The 82-year-old has been a vegetarian since she was 35 and it’s evident that being a vegetarian has kept her fit and healthy.

Cloris decided to participate in the campaign because she feels that the public needs to know about the benefits of vegetarianism, especially since the media puts so much money in meat marketing campaigns. When asked why she’s a vegetarian, Cloris said,

“You feel newborn, wonderful, fresh and healthy….You don’t have to eat meat to get protein. All vegetables have amino acids in them which means they become protein. Once you find that out, it’s a huge weight that you didn’t know you had on you, a societal weight.”

She said that since being a vegetarian she no longer has problems with asthma, arthritis or hay fever. Cloris is simply a great woman. Her strength is admirable and her beauty is glowing.

Celeb diet doc…
Ms Leachman is a smart woman. The idea that vegans and vegetarians do not get enough protein or somehow need food combining for their protein needs is completely false. As I have written previously…

The idea that plant based foods were deficient in certain amino acids was based on studies of the growth of young rats done in the early 1900’s. A subsequent study done in 1952, looked at human requirements for essential amino acids and found them to be very different from rats. Additionally it showed that the requirements for all the essential amino acids in humans could be met by many unprocessed plant foods, without combining, in excess of the recommended levels. The bottom line is that plant protein is “complete.” Vegetables and grains contain all essential amino acids and non-essential amino acids in varying proportions, and will supply in excess of what is necessary for your daily needs.
