Complete Protein Myth

veggies.jpg
I’m sure you’ve heard it before, animal protein is “complete” and plant protein is “incomplete.” Protein is made up of amino acids and 9 amino acids are considered “essential” because they cannot be synthesized by your body and must be derived from the food you eat. Animal protein has been referred to as “complete” because it contains all 9 essential amio acids. Because it is widely believed that plant protein is deficient in some essential amino acids, it has been referred to as “incomplete.” [Read more →]

Flawed Breast Cancer, Fruit and Vegetable Study

vegetables.jpg

It was widely reported this week that a diet high in fruits and vegetables provided no added benefit against breast cancer recurrence. In this study published in JAMA, more than 3,000 women (average age 53) who were treated successfully for early stage breast cancer were followed for 6-11 years. Breast cancer recurrence rates were no better for those women who consumed 9 or more daily servings of fruits and vegetables than those who consumed 5. This was surprise to many, and was viewed by the media as a “setback to the hope that better diets can prevent breast cancer recurrence.” [Read more →]

Health Benefits of Onions - Cry if you want to

onion3.jpg

Whenever I am cutting onions I am always reminded of the onion chopping scene in a hilarious French indie film Diva, where Jules, the main character, is wearing a scuba mask and snorkel to prevent crying. Crying is good. It means that the onions you are chopping have a lot of organosulfur compounds. These are the same compounds that give garlic its wonderful pungent aroma and are found in the Allium family of vegetables which also include leeks, chives and shallots. The organosulfur compounds found in onions and other Allium vegetables have been linked with anti-cancer benefits. [Read more →]

Health Benefits of Tomatoes

tomato.jpgTomatoes contain a carotenoid called lycopene which gives tomatoes their red color and has antioxidant properties. Lycopene may be one of the reasons tomato consumption has been linked with lower rates of cardiovascular disease and prostate cancer. Interestingly, tomato sauce consumption has been associated with an even greater reduction in prostate cancer risk compared with raw tomatoes and the availability of lycopene may be responsible. “Eat your Broccoli”

My mom was always dishing out the nutritional advice during dinner. I was never sure if she really meant it, or it was some ploy to get me, my brother and sister to finish our plates. One popular refrain included, “Eat your broccoli. It’s good for you”. [Read more →]

Healthy Grilling

grilling.jpg

With summertime here, it’s time to dust off the grill. Before you do, consider this. While barbeque sauce may not come with a surgeon general’s warning on the label, it does promote the formation of Heterocyclic amines (HAAs) which are the same substances found in cigarette smoke. Beef marinated with barbeque sauce and grilled showed an almost 3 fold increase in HAAs compared with beef grilled without barbeque sauce. These mutagenic compounds, formed when meats are grilled under high heat, have been linked with increased cancer rates so it is reasonable to limit their consumption. Studies suggest that it is the fructose content, found in high fructose corn syrup and honey in many prepared barbeque sauces, which is responsible for the greater HAA formation during the grilling process. Go Organic and kick it up a notch

blackberry.jpgOrganic produce is more expensive than conventionally grown produce, so why buy organic? Organic produce is grown without synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. Traditional farming methods such as crop rotation, mulches and tillage are used to control weeds and natural fertilizers are used to enrich the soil. Besides limiting the pesticide residues you consume, organic farming methods kick up the nutritional value of the food you eat. [Read more →]
