If you’ve just come back from a run, you’re going to need to rebuild the electrolytes lost when you worked up a sweat. Leslie Bonci, a nutrition and fitness consultant to Runner’s World magazine, shares 3 simple ideas for what you should eat after your run.
“Sooner is better than later,” Leslie says in her video for the fitness magazine. “Ideally if you can consume something within 15 minutes after you run, you’re going to be on your way to a quicker recovery, which means you’ll be better when you go out there to run the next day.”

Ellen DeGeneres Tests the Shake Weight
Last week talk show host and stand-up comedian Ellen DeGeneres featured new workout equipment on her show – the Shake Weight. DeGeneres, who is a notorious infomercial addict on the lookout for new hot products for her talk show, demoed the tool and even asked her guest, Queen Latifah, for her thoughts.
The Shake Weight uses a technology called Dynamic Inertia. The shaking movement of the dumbbell fires up your arm, shoulder and chest muscles, and apparently you only need to use it for 6 minutes every day to feel results.
“An independent scientific study shows that the Shake Weight causes over 300% more EMG activity than the traditional dumbbells of the same weight,” a statement on the Shake Weight’s website says. “This is a result of the unique motion of the exercise, isometric contraction of the entire upper body required during use of the Shake Weight and the rapid pace of the muscle fatigue caused by one unique movement.”

Strenuous Exercise Linked to Anemia

If you consider yourself an exercise fanatic and always push yourself to the limit, be careful. Strenuous exercise could lower your blood count, causing anemia and iron deficiency.
New research has found a link between adults who follow an intense exercise routine and low blood count. The study, led by Dr Drorit Merkel from the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre in Tel-Hashomer, followed 153 new Israeli Defense Force recruits for a few months. Blood samples were taken before the soldiers began their combat training and then new samples were taken after 6 months.

Get Fit & Get a Tax Deduction

How would you like to write off your fitness expenses at the end of each tax year? The new PHIT Act, which was introduced to the US House of Representatives last spring, intends to revise the IRS code so individuals and couples can deduct fitness-related expenses from their tax returns.
PHIT stands for the Personal Health Investment Today Act and (if passed into legislation) could allow for a $1 000 deduction for individuals and a $2 000 deduction for couples who file jointly.

Soluble Fiber May Ease IBS

A new Dutch study has shown that soluble fiber helps ease Irritable Bowel Syndrome twice as effectively as insoluble fiber such as bran. The 12-week study, which involved 275 people, was published in the British Medical Journal and raised questions as to how effective bran is in treating IBS.
Participants were sorted into three groups: the first were given 10g of psyllium (a soluble fiber), the second 10g of bran (an insoluble fiber), and the last 10g of rice flour (a placebo). The researchers, led by Dr CJ Bijkerk, found that the first group who were given the soluble fiber saw their symptoms drop by 90 points on a standard scale, while the second group’s symptoms only dropped by 58 points and the placebo group’s dropped by 49 points.
During the study, a few participants in the bran group dropped out early because their symptoms had actually worsened.
“I think adding psyllium to the diet is the best treatment option to start with,” says Bijkerk. “In the study, people did this by adding it to things such as yoghurt and it had a real effect.”
Other sources of soluble fiber include oats, dried beans, nuts, barley, flax seed and strawberries.

Why Burgers and Ice Cream Make You Fat

If you’ve ever heard the burger you’ve just bitten into say “eat me”, you may not be just hearing voices. A new study shows that the fats found in foods such as burgers and ice-cream can actually control your brain.
Conducted at the UT Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, the study found that once ingested, fat molecules in these foods head straight to the brain where they prompt the brain to send out signals to the rest of your body to ignore appetite-suppressing signals. Scientist Deborah Clegg says that usually these signals (from leptin and insulin) tell you when you’ve had enough to eat.
“Our findings suggest that when you eat something high in fat, your brain gets ‘hit’ with the fatty acids, and you become resistant to insulin and leptin,” says Clegg. “Since you’re not being told by the brain to stop eating, you overeat.”
