Ted Ligety: Off-Season Training
While working off that holiday weight, why not get in shape for the Winter Olympics too! The games kick off on February 12, but most athletes train throughout the year, conditioning their bodies even in the off-season.
Olympic slalom skier Ted Ligety trains a few hours 3 times a week in his local gym, focusing on jumping, heavy weights, “explosive movements” and core work as well. Because of the intensity and short time span of his chosen sport, Ted also incorporates pushing himself to the limit for 1-minute spurts at a time to build his tolerance levels.
“There’s definitely a lot of sports science that goes into our workouts,” he says in the video above. “They test us a couple times a year to figure out our strengths and weaknesses and then they formulate a plan based on that. It’s definitely more of a science now than when I was skiing without a team.”
