US Diabetics On A Junk Food Diet

Despite all the information that is freely available on diabetes and the support offered to diabetic individuals, a study has revealed that many Americans with type 2 diabetes are not eating a health diet. They’re consuming way too much salt and fat.
Dr Mara Vitolins from Wake Forest University School of Medicine studied the eating habits of 2 757 participants who were between the ages of 45 and 75, had a BMI higher than 25 and had type 2 diabetes. The results from the food frequency questionnaire were astounding in that they showed that 93% of respondents consumed too many calories, 92% ate too much sodium and 85% ingested more than the recommended amount of saturated fat.
The study also reported that less than half of respondents ate the minimum amount of fruit, vegetables and grains on a daily basis than is recommended for type 2 diabetes sufferers.
“These overweight adults diagnosed with diabetes are exceeding recommended intake of fat, saturated fats, and sodium, which may contribute to increasing their risk of cardiovascular disease and other chronic diseases,” the research concluded.
