Vegetarian and Vegan Celebs Give Meat-Free Holiday and Turkey Tips

by Shannon on November 28, 2010

It’s a tradition that dates back ages.  Each year American’s and their families and friends come together on Thanksgiving day to celebrate the things they are most thankful for in their lives.  Perhaps the biggest tradition of the day is the preparation of the famous bird-the turkey.  Some bake it, some fry it, some smoke it, and the list goes on.  For many, the entire feast depends on the success of the turkey.

But, this year, some celebrities are encouraging others to spare the turkey this holiday season and opt for something else to feast upon this Thanksgiving and Christmas.  A vegan turkey, for instance. Yes, there is such a thing.

Save a life this Thanksgiving, and join me in starting a new tradition by adopting a turkey instead of eating one,” says Ellen DeGeneres, who recently became the spokesperson for Farm Sanctuary’s Adopt-A-Turkey project.

Olivia Wilde agrees with Ellen, reminding people that many of the side dishes are already vegan so people really wouldn’t be missing out on indulging themselves with a feast.

Step Up actress Jenna Dewan, who has even made vegan food that her non-vegan husband enjoys, suggests using Earth Balance butter and Daiya cheese.

For those who are partaking of a vegan/vegetarian holiday that do not want to give up the Turkey tradition, try a tofu turkey like Katy Perry, who is making the change to support her new vegetarian husband, Russel Brand.

Other celebrities that intend to have vegetarian dishes for their holiday meals include Kim Basigner, Casey Affleck, and Juliett Lewis.

Animal causes such as Compassion Over Killing, Mercy for Animals, PETA, and The Humane Society of the United States that the celebrities support are offering vegetarian recipe ideas on their websites.
