Whitney Port: Workout Routine

When Whitney Port moved to New York City to star in the reality series The City she learned how walking can be a great form of exercise.  The California native decided to take make the cardio portion of her workouts the walk to the gym and then once at the gym she’ll do strength and circuit training.  She said,
“I go to the gym three times a week, but I pretty much only do squats, lunges, and circuit training.”
She said she hardly ever takes a cab and her roundtrip walk to the gym totals 50 minutes.  For her petite frame that is definitely sufficient exercise.
Many people underestimate the power of walking, it is a great exercise that’s easy on the joints and you can go as fast or as slow as you want. To determine how many calories you burn while walking follow this formula:
Your weight x distance = energy used walking
It’s not necessarily the time you walk but it’s the distance so a beginning walker should work on distance first and then try to increase speed.  A simple rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile for a 180 pound person.

It’s not necessarily the time you walk but it’s the distance so a beginning walker should work on distance first and then try to increase speed by power walking and maybe even someday by jogging.  A simple rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile for a 180 pound person.  So an hour’s walk would burn 400 calories, and that’s not too bad for a stroll around the park.
