Creator of The Zone Diet, Dr. Barry Sears believes that the message the Obama administration is sending regarding childhood obesity is all wrong. Now supporters of both The Zone Diet and the Obama administration such as Jennifer Aniston, Demi Moore, and Sarah Jessica Parker are faced with choosing between the health approaches of The Zone Diet vs Michelle Obama.
Encouraging youth to eat less and exercise more is not enough, according to Sears. The obesity problem the nation faces is not so much how much the nation is eating and how little the nation is moving, but rather how much intake of omega-6 fatty acids has increased and how much intake of omega-3 fatty acids have decreased.
“The problem really comes from radical changes, almost like a gigantic genetic experiment that started some thirty years ago when we basically started increasing the levels of omega-6 fatty acids in the American diet and with that we unleashed a Pandora’s box of increased inflammation that is making our population fatter, sicker and dumber,” says Sears.”
Omega-6 fatty acids are found in vegetable oil, corn oil, and soybean oil–all commonly used in households of America. However, the acids are also found in nearly every processed food on the market today while omega-3 fatty acids are found in foods such as fish oils, walnuts, and spinach–foods that are not as commonly consumed by Americans.
What is the difference between the two fatty acids besides the numbers in their names? Omega-6 fatty acids cause inflammation while omega-3 fatty acids decrease inflammation. By consuming more omega-6 fatty acids than omega-3 fatty acids, Americans are promoting obesity.
the balance [of omega-6 consumption to omega-3 consumption] at the turn of the century was about one-to-one — that’s a good balance. Today it is about twenty-to-one. And as a consequence what’s happening is this increased inflammation is turning on genes that are simply making our children fatter,” explains Dr. Sears.
Consequently, no matter how much Americans exercise or eat less, the weight problem will not go away. People will continue to gain weight until the inflammatory genes triggered by the omega-6 fatty acids are controlled. Dr. Sears even goes so far as to suggest that some people who exercise a lot will even gain more weight due to becoming more hungry.
Of course,the obvious answer to solving the problem this society faces regarding omega-6 fatty acids is to simply stop consuming so much of it, but unfortunately, that is not as easily accomplished as it may sound. The other option is to consume more omega-3 fatty acids on a daily basis.
That was one of the greatest health care disasters in the twentieth century — was the day parents stopped giving their children fish oil,” Sears says. “That awful tablespoon of cod-liver oil contains about 2.5 grams of omega-3 fatty acids, and that is enough to turn back the inflammatory tide.”

Hmmm… so basically consuming more Omega 3 will make everyone thin? Yeah, you should be believe that…like totally:) And guess what Barry Sears sells? His own line of Omega 3 supplements, now convenient:) He’s got the processed food part right. Eat processed foods and you get fat. Now I would recommend a fish oil supplement for health reasons but it will not significantly reduce your weight. That’s only done by changing your diet.
